I just went through my first box of nickels from the early 1900's. Are these fairly common or did I just get lucky?

Did you get the box from the bank or did you order it?

I have found a couple of dozen of them, usually in BWR though. Earliest is an 1888, latest a 1912. But I have probably gone through about 850,000 nickels to find them.
