You can really get into the weeds with a type set if you wanted. Myself, I don't think a type set merits all that but would be needed for a series set.
Wow, if single-year design changes count, you're going to have a hard time seeing anything for all the quarters...?
I never even considered a “No VDB” type, even though it is obviously distinct after you pointed it out. My Intercept Shield type album does have spots for the four Lewis & Clark nickels. They are on a different page so there is a jump from the 2003 nickel to the 2006 and then these 2004-5 designs are in the back of the set.
I consider most of those distinct "Types" and include them in my own Type Set. I personally don't include the 5c Westward Journey, but that is only for personal preference reasons. Clearly, it's a distinct type. Here is how I breakdown the series you mentioned: I figured that if "with VDB" gets to be its own Type, than also segmenting Jefferson Nickel made sense. "With designer" initials. But Most Type collectors probably don't want to get into the weeds on this point, and don't make them distinct. I think I might be the only one actually, LOL. I think most Type collectors would consider the 1921 Peace dollar to be distinct from the rest of the series.
I agree, even I don't define the type that way, (specifically carving out Lincoln Wheat cent no VDB (1909-1917), but perhaps I should considering how niche I get with other minor design changes. The cool thing about Type collecting is that you get to define it your own way on the smaller points. Most people agree on the broad definition of a type set, but how detailed you get is up to you. Many people base their set on a Dansco 7070 set definition. For me, the 7070 has very clear deficiencies, missing broad Types that clearly should not have been skipped, and then going ahead and including 4 x Classic silver commems. (why not 1, why not 6?). I got to a point where I had to move past the limitations of the 7070.
Lincolns - Yes. Each of these is a distinctly different design, albeit small changes. Nickels - For these modern nickel issues, I only place one of the issue in the Set. Peace Dollars - I treat the High Relief as optional although I will probably get one. Now the High Relief St. Gaudens I probably won't get due to cost. Of course, it's your type set and you can exclude/include whatever suits your fancy and budget. For example, I include any coinage that circulated in what would become the U.S. all the way back to the 16th century. I only include U.S. issues that circulated as money which excludes patterns, special Mint issues and the like. Some folks exclude proofs but I include them if the coin design circulated. What I like about Type collecting is that you are free to dive down any rabbit hole you like. Unless, of course, you allow yourself to be externally constrained by Registry Sets and Dansco albums.
