Ok folks, I have a gold proof and a gold uncirculated version of the Apollo 11 coin. I am looking to sell one and keep the other. Usually I would expect the proof to be worth a better premium in the future but looking at current sales, 24,160 for the proof and 10,326 for the uncirc, I am wondering if down the road this will cause the uncirculated version to demand the better premium due to less minted. Of course, we don't know where sales will go until it's sold out or discontinued next year, but at this rate we would expect to see 35,000 proofs and about 15,000 uncirculated. What do you all think will happen with these as time goes on?
If you check past sales of Proof vs Uncirc gold coins I think the Uncirc most of the time is "worth" a few dollars more in general due to less sold. Of course, "down the road" could be the problem as in ... 2 years ,5, 10? 15 ? I have all of them too, but not for an investment but simply for my own enjoyment of them.
Hi Ricer. Welcome to CT. Keep in mind anything that I say is pure speculation. You could get as informative of an answer from a Magic 8-ball really. But here’s my take...... The Apollo coins were a popular subject matter. They do have that going for them. However in reality they are a bullion purchase. And it seems that historically, bullion coins soon find their futures pretty closely tied to the bullion market. I own several recent gold commemorative coins with mintages far less than the Apollo coins that I have picked up at spot bullion price. I rather suspect in a few short years the Apollo gold will do the same whether uncirculated or proof...... Keep in mind that bullion buyers are different than coin buyers and commemorate coins walk that fine line. I rather hope the popular subject matter will treat the series favorably. But I rather don’t expect it will.
Generally, past modern commemoratives can be had for close to spot whether Proof or Uncirc. For instance with PRovidenMetals for $2.50 and $5 proof/uncirc this is there ad but this being a more special commem, you may want to compare it to the baseball commem from a few years ago for a better comparison as those were curved too, and a better subject than all those general commems as posted above IMHO.
Yes it is all speculation, and ultimately of little importance as I'm also am not looking to make any future profit on the coin, but I did plan to sell one when I bought both. Just hadn't decided what one to sell just yet. I do hope the tap into some of the experience found on this forum as I am no expert and relativity new to the hobby. I may unload the uncirculated version and keep the proof for its undeniable eye appeal.
with the baseball comparison in which case from APMEX, the uncirc is selling for more. and the COA for more than the slabbed ?? Although I do not know what their release price was.
I’ll tell you this. The fields of the proof Apollo coins add a huge “wow” factor. Proof coins always have an added flair to them, but the fields REALLY make the Apollo proofs special. They super define the shadow effects. I much enjoy them.
Definitely. The proof in hand is heads over heels far better to look at than the uncirc. I think it will command a better price in the long run for Eye Appeal. But I'm unsure how the sold quantities will affect it. Luckily gold price is kinda low, so hopefully that will stay the same or increase over time.
I look at it this way. If your goal is to make a buck. Sell it fast while the hype has the price up. The price will drop. I'm not selling my full set. there unopened in in my safe, waiting to send in for grading. can't hardly stand not taking peek at them but I like the First Strike lable.
