I'm thinking of ordering one of these coins from Apmex. One the description it says: "Since we may have more than one of these coin(s) in stock, you should use this stock photograph as an indicator of the quality of the coin(s) you will receive. Be assured, you will receive the exact date, grade, mint mark and grading service you order whether raw or certified. Our coin(s) will not have toning unless otherwise noted." Does the toning they speak of in the last sentence mean that if I buy the coin, I won't have any red spots on the coin if I buy it? Also do you think it's possible to ask that the coin holder is not scuffed up at all?
Pretty much. But what you have to worry about is that the coins you buy may get the red spots after you own them. Doubtful.
If the coins are in the holders, hopefully they won't be exposed to oxygen (if that what really causes the red spots). I wonder if it is possible that red spots show up on coins at a later point in time. I wish they could tell me the case wouldn't be scratched. I wonder where they got the coins from. I'll have to call them.
The coins being in slabs has nothing to do with it because the slabs are not airtight. There have been quite a few of them where the red spots show up after the coin is slabbed.
Well that's not good. I thought slabs would be airtight. Do you think a better buy would be the coin in the mint packaging then? Is the mint capsule airtight?
No, there is no such thing as an airtight coin holder, none exist. Also, the first strike designation is completely meaningless. It is nothing but a marketing ploy used as a way to get even more money out of inexperienced and unknowledgeable buyers. There really is no such as a "good buy" on these NCLT (non circulating legal tender) coins. I suppose what would be considered as the best buy would be to find one being sold for as close to melt price as you can get. Whether it is slabbed (at any grade), in original packaging, or just slapped down on the counter in front of you is pretty much meaningless. About the best you can hope for is to find one for as cheap as you can.
