I bought this coin for not much more than melt. The coin came attributed as Album 1712. It was attributed as Khwarezm Shah Ala-ud-Din Muhammad II. Dated AH 61X. Mint of Ghazna, Afghanistan. I was hoping someone might be able to break the inscription down for me, anyone want to take shot. I know there has been some recent interest in Medieval coins. This one should fit the the Bill. 27 mm x 6.14 grams
Islamic coins never held much interest for me but that coin ain't bad for gold. Can't help ya, my friend. Nice score though.
Something religious I am betting, like there is no god but Allah and blah blah blah is his imam/prophet .... Congrats on the purchase!
I noticed the coin by itself would not gather "a bunch of likes" but maybe there is some likes on the fact that the coin comes from the ruler who had his empire depopulated and destroyed by Genghis Khan.Very close to the coins mint date.
Don't worry about the lack of likes or comments, AN. You have a very nice exotic collection that is the envy of the forum. Cheers.
Love the coin A-noob, but I think JA may only be able to help you with the translation???----Or perhaps Doug???
Nah, @Ancientnoob , this is a Ghazna gold Trade Token from 1220 AD for Fred's Hair Shop - 1 bottle of Shampoo... Sorry friend, like you - I love the eclectic...but I am fresh outta knowledge on this one! When I was in University, we had an unique degree - Altaic-Uralic studies... had friends who took courses... man, you must have majored in those studies!
Ooops...sorry, you misread. This is an Islamic culture... But, hey, perhaps you could ferment that shampoooooo.....
Hmm, I have no idea, of course. However, the script on your coin doesn't match that on this Album-1712 coin from Stephen Album's site. It's a different mint though and I don't know anything about Album's classification scheme. It's a shame that the attributions don't include transations
It was a mystery to me as well the weights of the coins and parts of the inscription are all different yet they are given the same ref number. It boggles my mind. THCoins is schooling me right now on WoC.
Sorry I cannot help man. I have never really gotten traction on Islamic coins. I have quite a few of the early Islamic and figural bronzes, but generally steer clear of full on Islamic coins.
Yes, this is a dinar of the Khwarezmshah 'Ala al-Din Muhammad, 1200-1220. Obverse center: "There is no god but Allah alone / Muhammad is the prophet of Allah / al-Nasir li-Din Allah (name of 'Abbasid caliph) / commander of the faithful". Obverse margin, Qur'an 9:33 (or portion thereof) "who sent him with guidance and a religion of truth in order that he might cause it to shine above all religion though the polytheists dislike it". Reverse center: "The sultan / the very great, nobility of the world / and of the faith, father of victory, Muhammad / son of [the] sultan, proof / of the commander of the faithful". Reverse margin, mint (not visible but similar examples at zeno.ru are attributed to Firuzkuh) and date (61x) formula. The title "burhan amir al-mu'minin" ("proof of the commander of the faithful") makes your coin Album 1712B, rated RR, rather than the 'standard' type 1712, rated common.
That looks like a Doug photo Masternoob. Couldn't possibly guess the translation, but an awesome piece nonetheless.
