I'll post the results next week. I'm getting so many interesting comments though, I thought some of you might want to share with everyone else as well. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=N3alUs4NstFpSMphJlUvGQ_3d_3d
This was my pm to Peter for the survey. I answered no and no and didnt answer #3. As to my comments. I live in Canada so no idea if this information will be of any value although canada too is struggling. To start off I am not a huge collector. I like to collect the odd jamaican coin when it comes in and there is a few series of Canadian coins that i still collect such as the dinosaur series which is one coin per year along with some quarters and such. If a coin is highly detailed, looks nice, and proof and pure silver being .999 I may buy it for my collection which I do time to time. That is the extant of my collecttng habits when it come to coins. However depending on spot value I like to collect silver bullion if the price is right. that I will always continually buy when i have an extra dollar to spend. I usally buy this bullion to keep for the long term and also as a way of saving money up. As of late I have not sold off any of my bullion since I have been fortunate enough that I havn't needed too. Something that is similar but is not in the coin genre but is still collecting is comics. I still also purchase comics time to time. Now I can only speak for myself as being fortunate that I don't have to sell off my collection. I don't know if my next comments are any of use but these are observations I have seen being that my best friend runs a coin and collectibles store in which I hang out time to time. His store has seen lower sales when it comes to actual coin collecting but has been stable when it comes to bullion especially silver. Their seems to be an influx of people coming in selling thier coins though in which he has of late has been having to be more selective of what he purchases and pretty much turns away anything common unless it has silver in it. Stamps on the other hand have strangely been doing a bit better at his store but not as good as it could be. Usually purchasers are looking for lower prices stuff under I would say $50 and not really buying the more expensive stuff. Also it would have to be understood that he has a loyal customer base. And a bit more off topic and has to do with the comic industry. There seems to be more books that are harder to get coming up for sale in the market places such as CGC and ebay. If you look at the for sales section of CGC you will see multiple ads such as "lost my job need to make a quick few books" or along the lines of that. There was even a discussion about it. On the other hand you look at companies like wizard and such that do comic conventions that are cancelling conventions because of the economy. Anyways it is hard times for some and because of it i would expect a lot of people would be selling off their stuff and the people better off as sually will pick up these bargains.
I didn't feel the survey pertained to me, as I am too stubern to sell any part of my collection. I'll leave that to my family after I'm six feet under. Actually I hope someone steps up and continues the tradition.
Im not planning on selling any of my collection either, therefore answering no to the first two questions also. The economy whether its good or bad doesnt really matter to me as far as buying coins is concerned. Thanks for the survey Peter!!!
I answered no to all three. Selling my collection wouldn't help with any of my debt were I in need of emergency funds. And that goes for anything else I collect.
Unfortunately, I've had to sell a couple of gold coins thinking I was going to buy the 2009 UHR St Gaudens coin. I didn't, so I could pay some bills. But now, I see how much these are going for on the secondary market I really should have bought one as I had planned. Whether or not I would have kept it is another matter. I think I'd still own it now and for a long time after. Bruce
My answer was that yes, I do plan on selling something in the next 6 months. I need to clean out parts of my collection to make room for other pieces. I have a whole box full of mint sets that I no longer collect. If I could sell those and put it into a good BU Washington Quarter I would! I would sell my whole collection tomorrow if some different things happened, but at this point, I don't see those happening tomorrow. Speedy
I answered no on all three. The economy hasn't effected me as far as income, so the need to sell coins as a result doesn't apply. It has effected many others, however, as is evedent if you are buying right now. Prices are low as there are now an overstock in everything as many are dumping their collections on the market so they can pay the bills. For those selling, it's bad as far as getting much for your coins. For those buying, it's Christmas out there every day. Guy~
i think the bulk of the people who are selling are trying to unload inherited coins or want to get out of coins they have no interest in (duplicates, part of a bulk deal, want to upgrade, want to shift gears). i'm really not seeing people looking to sell their collections to pay the rent/mortgage. but maybe i'm a tad isolated being near DC -steve
Now, I occasionally will use one of my coins as trade when I upgrade a coin, but I don't consider that selling part of my collection since I am just using it to get a better example, but I have been on a buying rampage this year. To date I have already spent more than 50% of what I spent all of last year and I'll probably be able to buy like this all year long. Of course it doesn't hurt any that I have a largely recession proof job right now, and boy am I thankful for it.
I am on the fence. I am still buying some lower priced coins, but I may have to part with some gold to pay some bills.
I too answered "no" to all three.... as long as I'm still working and making good money, I'll continue to buy. Maybe when I retire I might start selling if necessary to supplement my income (along with all those old comic books I've collected over the years... many worth in the hundreds of dollars). But who knows what the economy will be like in six months or six years, so today's "no" might become tomorrow's "yes".
Guess I'm really getting old. I have no idea of what this is about. Can't remember a survey of what appears to be about selling coins since so many mentioned selling coins.
Selling most if not all my collection, but not because I have to, but because I want to use the funds for something more important to me right now, child welfare in E. Europe.
Sure....one of the sets that I would like to complete someday is a set of Washington all in AU/BU grade. I'm missing a few of the early dates. Speedy
I answered no to all three questions, my business has not taken a hit from the economy and I don't believe it will. When buying new coins such as proof sets I buy more then one just in case I want to sell or trade some, that way i still have a least one complete collection. I also find that in todays market it is a good time for any one who wants to buy. I also do alot of roll searching and have found that there is a lot more customer rolled coins to go through. a lot of wheats and AU to BU lincolns and Quarters are showing up as people turn in what they may have been saving for years. Bill
I answered no to all three also - my numismatic purchases have not taken a hit from the economy yet. Of course I keep hoping some steals will show up, but no luck for me so far.
