Am wondering if anyone here has tried SPG www.secondpartygrading.com? What has your experience been with them? I know CAC will only evaluate and sticker PCGS and NGC slabbed coins. Is this also the case with SPG? It seems I cannot find any coins for sale with SPG stickers.
Doesn't seem to have any track record yet, at least not that I can see. For me that means I'll wait to see how it grows ... or dies.
Labeling one's service as a second party grading service is not good. The term third party grading was coined to represent that the grading service is truly objective, and has no financial interest in the grade assigned to the submitted coin, since the grading service is neither the buyer nor the seller. The label "second party grader" potentially reflects an awareness that the second party in any transaction is necessarily either the buyer or seller, and that the grader being one of those two parties therefore can, while appearing to be objective, influence the grade to its advantage, whether selling or buying subject coin.
@ToughCOINS I agree the name is going to be misinterpreted. I'm sure what they were aiming for was 2nd opinion....
ANACS is O.K. but the coins in the holders are not very sought after compared to the big two. If your into VAM's, you have no choice.
SEGS has a reputation for being best in VAMS along with ANACS. As I've said in previous posts I use both SEGS and ANACS regularly to slab my coins. My opinion though is SEGS is great with American coin varieties but when it comes to foreign coin varieties it seems very foreign to them. I guess they prefer playing it safe in areas they are less knowledgeable of. I do understand how that would make sense but yet that also could limit their interest of people wishing to submit foreign coins to them. By the way, ANACS is having another insider special, 10 U.S. coins for $115, and a limit of 30 total. No charge for return shipping. I need to round up 10 U.S. coins though and unfortunately I'm not there yet. It'll probably pass me by.
Looks like another eagle eye ripoff. I bet Rick Snow is wishing that the had a trademark or patent on the sticker-a-slab racket. I trust my own eyes, Rick and CAC in that order until there is a good reason to add another name to the list.
