I found 3 this year....along with 20 40% half dollars. The funny thing is, I found 23 coins containing silver and 16 of those were in ONE bank issued box of coin rolls. ($500 box containing 50 rolls). I have searched 5 total boxes this year. In 4 of those boxes (4000 coins) I found 7 total silver coins and only 1 of those was a 1964 Kennedy. But-- in the one "mother load" box I found 16 total silver coins, 3 of which were 90% (2 Franklins and a 64 Kennedy). Wish all the boxes were like that!! The truth is....in my half dollar roll searches, I am finding more S minted proofs, and current dates which aren't supposed to be in circulation...than I am finding silver. I guess a lot of grandkids are out there today, raiding the family coin collections, and spending the proof coins and "not issued for circulation" coins into the great mix. A better summation of my findings: On average, I am finding less than 2 coins containing silver of ANY kind out of every 1000 coins searched. I think the odds of finding 90% silver are about 1 in 4000 coins.
Shorter answer: In my experience it is pretty damn hard to find a 64 (or earlier) half dollar floating around in circulation. When silver prices soared during the recession I think every Tom, Dick and Harry became a junk silver junkie.
I think nickels are my favorite. But even there...you won't find the war nickels!! You'll find buffalos and lots of coins from the 30's and 40's but people have taken the war nickels out. Amazing.
I was at my pharmacy today. When he opened the regester drawer I looked. I thought everybody did boy was I wrong. I saw some CWC in there, I tried to talk him out of some but had no luck. He seemed kinda upset I saw them.
I've only found 1 war nickel. I don't search a lot of rolls but thought the odds were better than that
Well, I've found a roll and a half of War Nickels, along with 25 Buffalos, and 2 V Nickels in 7 months of searching this year. Someone must be pulling the War Nickels in your local area.
They are out there, but the key is to be persistent, and hit as many banks as possible. Ask the tellers if they have any halves in their trays, or if they have any rolls. Sometimes, you'll get lucky. So far, I've found 2 64s and a 65 in teller trays. I haven't done a lot of box searching yet, but in the 15 or so boxes I've gone through to date, I've found 1 Walker, 4 90% Kennedys, and 14 40%-ers.
I have found 27 90% halves this year and 93 40%. Check the results thread, there are people there that still find plenty of 90% halves. A lot more than me.
Go through enough rolls and be adventurous and use some charm and you will find them. I have even found Franklin proofs in the last few months.
Ah. I'd seen CWR here all along, but never CWC. Makes me think of individually-wrapped coins like chocolates.
