Looks like a fantasy token possibly made by members of the 'Society for Creative Anachronism' and their ancient Moneyer Craft Guilds. You should see some of the coins made these guys, simply GORGEOUS!!! Take Care Bone
I don't think so Ben. I've had a lot of contact with the SCA through my daughter and son-in-law, who have been active members for about 25 years; and IMHO the design doesn't seem to fit their focus.
Cool, I'll bet they have a blast re-enacting all sorts of historical events. As far as the coin, your probably right, as mid thru late medieval coinage seems to be their (as you put it) focus. Additionally, my sister-in-law and her husband are members up here as well. Here is a link. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sca_moneyer/ Take Care B
Looks to me somebody had some time and created it. I see the Leaning tower of Pisa, Gumby and a pyramid. Also see the rising sun from Japan. A viking head dress? Interesting, the more I look at it. Have no idea what it all means but hopefully somebody can identify it and let us know
I don't know who made it, how, or why, but it strikes me as very Egyptian in motif. The "obverse" is obviously representative of the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids at Giza, with the Nile in the foreground. The "reverse" looks like some kind of pharaoh figure in headdress, with hierglyphs surrounding it. Maybe someone was just doing some coin carving, or maybe some kind of souvenir? Or some kind of Mardi Gras throw?
It's got to be Egyptian - the reverse has hieroglyphs that I recognize. he most obvious to me is the horizontal squiggly line at the top to the left (11:00) which - if I remember correctly - stands for water.
For all we know,it could be one of those Freemasons tokens,as they use a lot of Ancient Egyptian symbolism in the ceremonies. It doesn't even look metal to me.It could be made of wood, just like a wooden nickel. Aidan.
Well Thanks to all who looked at it.. It is metal.. and it's heavy-thick.. and Nope not a Mardi Gras throw? those coins are thin, nothing like this one. This one looks bronze, or brass? Very pretty and heavy. Sure wish I knew for sure what it is. Egyptian, Aztec, whatever.. it's nice.. Thanks You All..Well done!! P.S. If Any of You ever do see one anything like this.. Please let me know.. Thanks cho cho
