I found this coin in amongst my great uncles war memorabilia. Was just wondering if anyone knew where it might be from and what year. It is a small coin (1.5cm across) and pretty crude. One side is a head and the other looks like two skeletons fighting, one had a sheild? and is over the top of the other. It's really interesting and I was just wondering about its origin. Thanks , Jo
The falling horseman type of Roman Emperor Constantius II is one of the most common ancient coins but there are rare ones in the series that would require better images, weights and measurements to rule out. Yours, from style, might be one of the less common ones or it might be a barbarous copy. Depending on the details (weight especially) this could be 348 to 361 AD. My guess is earlier if the coin is over 20mm diameter.
Thanks Dougsmit... I'd say it is a common one because it is only 15mm and lightweight. Thanks for the info and your reply
