has anyone ever gotten lucky and bought a coin that was really something else ex 1916merc that ended up being a 16D things like that?
I recently bought a Swiss 2 Francs 1906 without even looking at it... costed me 2 euro! When I took a loop and carefully checked it, it was a nice MS-62 to MS-65 coin worth at least 400-500 Euro... it on its way to PCGS now!!!! A couple months earlier I bought a Swiss also 5Fr 1857 in VF ... costed me around 200-240 Euro but when I took a better look at it, the surfaces looked very "mirror-like" to me... It's on its way to ANACS and hopefully will get back labeled as Specimen which means it's a coin listed 1200$ at Krause which due to condition can fetch 600-800 Euro! But... both coins are hard to sell..... anybody interested can tell me!!! Have fun collecting!
Got Lucky Twice - 1) Paid $6 for a 1956 Proof Quarter, got it certified PF66CAM worth about $66 last time I checked 2) Paid $9 for a 1955 Half Dollar, turns out it is a 'Bugs Bunny' variety with FBL. I conservately grade it 64+. I have since turned down an offer of $255.
I bought a generic half cent and a generic bust dollar for my type set. Later I found out that each was a variety, maybe not the rarest, valuable one, but also not the most common. The dollar is a wide date lo 8 the half cent is a large 6 with stems
I purchased a clipped 1858 Flying Eagle on ebay that turned out to be an 1858/7. Probably my best score. Jason
In sorting through my coins, I have found a few nice ones that I didn't know I had, that would like to have somebody eventually help me grade, as I am not that experienced yet. I do OK if under AU, but upward gets a little sticky for me. (edited to correct typo)
i've been collecting coins for a while, but i recently inherited over 1500 world coins. i'm still in the lengthy process of grading them, but most seem to be fine, extra-fine.
I got a 1876-CC trade dollar on eBay from China of all places, for $7. That was my all time greatest lucky find.
I would think something as obvious as 1916-P / 1916-D would be extremely uncommon. People cherrypick rare die varieties from time to time. But that requires knowledge, skill, perseverence... it's not a "something for nothing" deal.
Isiah is having a good time bumping ancient threads today. There's about a dozen of them or so. :rolling:
This thread isn't too bad though IMO. I actually don't see any problem with this thread being bumped, as it does have usefullness. JMO. Phoenix
But while we are talking about luckiest finds, I would have to say that my luckiest find was the 1888O that my dad gave me as a kid. A few years back I really got into Morgans and started to look for some varieties with the Morgans that I had. This is when I noticed that I had a nice "hot lips" variety.
Bought a box of books and a box of old "empty" tubes from the shop for $30. They were just going to throw this stuff away. Inside was a full roll of misc. mercs(38PDS,39P,1918 etc.), a 1916 buffalo, a 1901 V nickel, some foreigns, misc stamps, a 1943 walking liberty, newspaper article on 1960 lincoln varieties from 1960's and some other misc. good stuff.
