One of my top 3 projects. (Long Term). It is a shame it is against store policy for me to buy anything. They actually have 3 crazy toned merc dimes. One of which is a date I am missing. Please share any toned danscos. ~Jason
Just wondering, did they put a price tag on them? I am working on a merc set, and I want anything high grade and toned. Starting to like them toners.
BTW, that is a very nice coin book, vintage for sure! :thumb: I think it should be considered a collectible
No price tag yet. I haven't discussed it with them. The thing about it is that although I can do whatever in my own personal collection, When it comes to work I have to maximize profit. So I might be listing the 3 for a price tag of 150 total.
That depends upon the year and how they are toned. Per pm discussion I don't see anything in the book worthy of grading.
Notice that 42/1? Also, Jason, that folder is even more odd than I thought. Notice how it goes P, S, then D. While the new danscos go P, D, then S. Very cool! :thumb:
Yeah, this is my own personal collection. There is infact a 1942 2/1 in there LOL. I threw it in because the other mercs keep toning. Some sort of chemical is present in that old cardboard. I was handling a few of these mercs and accidently put my hand up to my mouth. Was sick for 3 days. The pictures do no justice. I need an expert photographer to make a post on capturing tone. Some of those beauties are rainbow NT. Then again they are about VF, so not sure about the grading?
I have found that circulated Mercury Dimes will tone better than most other series for whatever reason. My album collection is not a toned collection per se, but I do have several toned examples.
My toned Merc set came to a screeching hault. I pryed a few of them out to look at the reverse and found out that they had turned black!!!! Very sad. Not really sure what to do at this point. Many of the later dates have outstanding toning on the obverse, but the reverse is black. Can any experts out there give me some serious advice here? I haven't done anything with them.
I have several of these old books as well. The buffalo nickel album like this one also turned the coins black on the reverse. Not to mention, the reverses aren't even displayed. The coins are very difficult to remove also. Jason, my advice would be to go ahead and give the black ones a dip. Black (terminal) toning needs to be stopped. Here is an example of dipping a terminal coin. http://www.cointalk.com/t140858/
Thank You. I will read this article, and possibly give a phone call to a local dealer (the man around here) to see if he can help me out with the dipping process.
I wish I had the time to start a Merc set. I feel like I'm working on too many sets and not narrowing them down to a couple. Totally going against my own New Year's resolution. Anyways, I like those old albums, I've seen some like it in buffalo nickels. Not exactly archival safe, I'm sure it will tone anything with no problems.
