:hail: I WAS ONCE THE PROUD OWNER OF A 1955 LINCOLN, GENUINE DOUBLE DIE!!! :hail: Yep, it looked identical to the genuine one, but that was before I had started collecting & I knew zilch about them or the fact that it was valued at more than $.01! I had just gotten it via a Taco Bell drive thru one day and thought it was a neat coin. I saved it in the car's ashtray for about 8 months before my kids spilled soda onto them all. It made them turn a greenish/whitish color & stick together, so I tossed them into the garbage can. I've been pouting about it for the last few months since I found out even though this occurred years ago. Anyone else have any great stories about the "one that got away"??
Ya' know I can't say that I have ever knowingly had one that got away, but I'm positive with all the change that we go through during life, that we have all tossed at least one away that has some kind of value, other than face, to the coin. I've sold a few I regret selling, but that is about it. That is an interesting story you have told. One would think you might've done some research after seeing the major doubling of a 55' DD. Oh well, maybe another one will pop up again some day...
I would now! Back then I had dial up internet and knew zero about coin collecting. It was neat enough to hang onto for awhile, but that's about it. Somewhere, deep inside of a Pittsburgh trash dump is my lovely little clump of change.
I wish I still had my NGC AU50 Seated Liberty Dollar. I sold it intentionally but I cannot find anything close to what I paid for it.
SaltySam, Did you get it evaluated by NGC yourself? I've been curious to know if that process is worthwhile for the nice coins.
The process is worthwhile in itself. Of course some say set a dollar value on the coin at $200. I have sent in a few that were not really worth the grading fee - but I used it as a learning process. I would say something like a 1955 DD would be worth it, just to get it in a genuine holder.
Yes, I sent it in with several other coin's myself. I was surprised at the grade because there was a noticeable nick on the rim which I thought would downgrade the coin. NGC didn't even make reference to it on the label. Just a straight AU50 grade. That put it's retail at about $750. I still didn't like the nick so I got rid of it.
