I recently joined the group here and have been lurking for a while. I've dabbled in a few types of coins but my current interest is shipwreck Spanish cobs, but I don't see much discussion of this type of coin here in the forum. I was just wondering if there are any collectors here. Although Spanish colonial cobs are easy to find, they certainly aren't cheap. So I'm trying to get the most bang for the buck by buying a few that have a known history and have COAs. It's nice to have a coin with a date, mint, and assayer but with many shipwreck coins you also know where the coin has been, how it got there, how long it was there, who found it, and more. To me, that makes a coin much more interesting. Again, I was just interested to see if there are others who share my interest. I also have a number of post-cob era milled dollars ( 8 and 2 reales ) from shipwrecks. I also like some of the beautiful modern stuff from the Perth Mint, although I haven't acquired anything just yet. My wife's going to kill me as it is.:rolling:
I don't collect cobs per say but I do study them. A lot of great history there, shipwrecks being a part of it. At some point I may try and assemble a crude sort of type set. There has been discussion here on cobs, but normally it is restricted to members asking authentication questions. If you have some, post 'em.
