I pick these up once in awhile and I'm wondering if anyone else collects them or knows anything about them? The top one is a bit scarce, at least that's what I think. In the past I've looked on ebay to see what Boy Scout tokens they have and I've never seen the top one. Now I hope they came out in order. :kewl:
I remember having that first token years ago when I was a we-be-lo in cub scouts. Had to of been at least 11 years ago. I should try and dig it up if I still have it. Edit- And to my knowledge they just gave them out. We didn't have to do anything to earn them.
Well that was quick. Wasn't quite as buried as I thought it would be. Its not the same one though. Its got the oath like your first one does, but the other side doesn't have the We-Be-Lo fur de lance like yours, just a small one with words around it. Ill try to post a pic later, right now I have wood to stack.
Yes, that Cub scout token is purdy cool. When you get the time go ahead and post a pic, I'd like to see what the difference is. I heard thru the grapevine that there are only Boy scouts now but I don't know for sure, also I live in California so it may be different elsewhere. Anyone?
Far as I know, cub scouts still exist. My supervisor's two youngest sons are cub scouts. Any way, got the pics of my scout token. In case you cant see right above the fur de lance it says "A scout is" and then has more words radiating around it, Ill list the words that radiate around the Fur de lance starting with the one right above it going clockwise. Reverent, Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, and Clean. http://s737.photobucket.com/albums/xx15/piratej21/scout token/
Not to be nit picky but that scout motto is actually "A scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent." Yes cub scouts do still exist. My wife and I were responsible for starting up a pack about 4 years ago. We moved up to Boy Scouts when our son moved up but the pack is still going strong with about 60 kids. One of the things I do with scouts is teach Coin Collecting Merit Badge. Here are the requirements for the merit badge http://www.boyscouttrail.com/boy-scouts/meritbadges/coincollecting.asp Richard
Good to hear! :thumb: If anyone has any tokens, post away. I wonder if the older ones are worth any dollars? Just wondering, I'm not selling just think the 1952 I have is really cool and from clear across the country from me. :kewl:
I actually found all my old merit badges, and oddly enough, the coin collecting badge was not among them. And I remember at least trying to get it, but obviously for some reason I didn't. Maybe it was because 11 years ago I had no clue what the state quarter program was:mouth:.
Not a token but maybe something for those of you who collect in this theme, the Girl Scout Commemorative Coin Act "authorizing the minting of 350,000 silver dollar coins in honor of Girl Scouts and the achievements of the 50 million women across the nation whose lives have been influenced by Girl Scouting."
I've off and on thought about it: I've got a nice unique piece. I think the neater stuff would be the national jamborees and OA national convention items. And of course stuff from the teens. I plan to buy two of the scout commemoratives next year.
I am a collector of Scouting exonumia. I concentrate mostly on the Excelsior Shoe Company tokens, but I do have a hodge podge of other Scouting items. Values are from my 1995 reference on Scouting exonumia. The 1st token (Scout Oath) I could not find an exact match for this one, but I will check later as it is almost 4am and I need some sleep. I found both dies, but not both on the same token. The 2nd (diamond shaped) token is known as a Cub Scout Pocket piece. id is 1972 (18a), R1 value rating $2 in F/VF, $3 in XF. There is another variety without a comma after PEOPLE on the reverse. The 3rd (BSA Vote Campaign) Medallion was made by Freedom's Foundation, Inc., Valley Forge, Pa. There are two basic varieties (plus die trial pieces for each). The silver colored plastic was given to each Scout that participated in the campaign while the gold colored ones were given to the Scout leaders. The id is 1952 1(b), and is somewhat scarce with an R6 value rating - $15 in ave. circ., $20 F/VF, $25 XF.
Glad to hear someone else knows something about scout tokens. I appreciate the info. I'll post again, if I come across something else. :thumb:
Tokenman you wouldn't happen to have any information on my token would you? I don't recall any special reason I received it, but would like to know if there was.
Hello Pirate, Your token is listed in the unclassified medallion section, id U14. It is called an Oath and Laws Pocket Piece, and it is an official Boy Scouts issue. It is an oxidized bronze medallion, 36mm diameter. The obverse is the side with the Scout Oath. It has an R1 value rating - $1 in F/VF, $3 in XF (1995 values). If anyone is interested in obtaining a copy of the reference that I have, it is titled: Scouting Exonumia Worldwide by Rudy J. Dioszegi, 2nd edition Sept. 1995. I'm not sure if the info in the front is still correct, but I have the author's mailing address - PM me if you would like that info. Related to and mentioning Boy Scouting are the Excelsior Shoe Company tokens. While they are covered in the reference above, a more detailed reference is Excelsior Shoe Company Tokens by Dick Hamel, 2005.
fretboard - I still could not find the die pairing as shown on the first token. I could ony find those dies with other pairings, sorry. The first ref. I mentioned is about 1 1/4" thick, soft cover, I would estimate at lest several hundred pages. It is also fairly well illustrated. The Excelsior Shoe book has 68 pages and also well illustrated with drawings, photos and identification diagnostics.
