I am a hobby coin collector.. Just buy and collect some cheap old coins when I travel. Happen to pick up this Meiji 1873 20 years ago at a flea market in Malaysia and 2 other Meiji silver coins for Singapore $20... Can anyone advise if this coin is real?
The Meiji 6 - 1873 One Yens are extremely rare patterns. As far as I know, it is the only western dated One Yen ¥. The edge is too wide when compared to the photo in Jacobs "Japanese Coinage" p 96. So I think the chances are very slim that it is authentic. The coin's weight should be 26.96 grams. - 38.6 mm. Even though your coin may not be authentic, it is still collectible and has value.
