I am a hobby coin collector..
Just buy and collect some cheap old coins when I travel.
Happen to pick up this Meiji 1873 20 years ago at a flea market in Malaysia and 2 other Meiji silver coins for Singapore $20...:)

Can anyone advise if this coin is real?

Not an expert, but the date looks very questionable

Some larger pictures would help, but from what you have provided, the coin does not look authentic.

The Meiji 6 - 1873 One Yens are extremely rare patterns. As far as I know, it is the only western dated One Yen ¥. The edge is too wide when compared to the photo in Jacobs "Japanese Coinage" p 96. So I think the chances are very slim that it is authentic. The coin's weight should be 26.96 grams. - 38.6 mm.

Even though your coin may not be authentic, it is still collectible and has value.
