There are a ton of nice high quality coins. I got two proxy bids in day one auction. If, I fail there is always day 2 I wish everyone good hunting!
You will find most auction sites on sixbid.com Roma being one of the top auction houses for ancient/ medieval coinage.
Lotta great coins in that one to be sure. I've still never bid in an auction that wasn't USD-based though. Currency conversions and international shipping are complexities that I just haven't been willing to tackle. I'm sure that they aren't as bad as I assume them to be, but surely they can be a headache (or costly) to some degree.
You should read all the auction threads in this forum, there is many headaches with high fees, payment issues, long or lost or even wrongly shipped items. I avoid them like the plague. Some people swear by them though, but I am not one of them.
If they are using Euro's it's an easy conversion rate. Thankfully the USA Dollar is now equal in value to the Euro. I'm loving how strong our Dollar is and I've been bidding and buying on Italian eBay. It's made a big difference for me being on a level playing field when I'm bidding against European bidders.
It doesn't make sense to me that we could be dealing with a somewhat extreme inflation problem within the US while the dollar simultaneously increases in value compared to world currencies. Economics seems like a subject that should be pretty straight-forward, but in actuality, it tends to be very unintuitive in a lot of ways. In any case, while a strong dollar is obviously beneficial from a buying power perspective, it's not the conversion ratios that I'm worried about (solved pretty easily with a spreadsheet/calculator). I might be wrong, as I've never done it before, but what I'm afraid of are conversion fees and whatever other nickel and diming that I would not have accounted for in the calculations. I don't want to buy $1000 worth of coins only to find out that currency conversions, shipping, and customs tack on another $150.
Has the Canadian Dollar also increased in value vs the Euro, compared to what it had been 5 years ago. Today one Euro is worth around $1.33 Canadian.
I was bidding at Roma today and won 2 coins. Prices seemed quite strong and in some cases crazy on a few lots today.
I had proxy bids on two lots/ double the current bid/ still ended up loosing both by twice my proxy high bid Well there is always day 2.....
I have my eye on a couple tomorrow. The pre-bids are already near my limit though so I'm not hopeful.
This is a big problem when dealing internationally - less so in the US which traditionally is free trade in practice (no import taxes). As it currently stands you would be well served to buy in Europe due to exchange rate - avoiding Spain/Italy (export expenses/delays). It is target of opportunity of course, since poor deals are everywhere.
0 for 2 today. Prices realized were high but fair, I didn't feel like chasing today though. Hard to bid aggressively when the 401K is tanking.
