Anybody getting to the "Who cares?" stage with the HOF coins?

Morgandude11 As long as it's Silver, I'm listening

Got my clads two weeks ago. They are really nice. However, the two silver ones--proof and unc. are still down as shipping on April 16, 2014. Hate to tell the US Mint, and the fulfillment services that they're using but that came and went. Nobody seems able to discern exactly when the coins are shipping--rumors say June. Anybody else disgusted, and think these coins are NOT worth the hype????. It isn't as if I waited to order them--was in the queue on the 27th, like everybody else (excluding the massive pre-orders that apparently took place from large purchases, which is intrinsically not fair). At any rate, this whole distribution method is a total fiasco.

It's all a sinister plot. I don't know what they are trying to accomplish, but it's definitely a sinister plot.

I was going to order some, including the gold, but actually had a work life full of meetings. Then I read how the mint doled these out to large purchasers, so I really, really, could give a rip at this point. Its enough that anything I might have purchased this year from the mint I have changed my mind. Until the mint acts like they care about collectors, (limit one per household initially), then I will not act like I care about them. Its left a taste in my mouth that I very much doubt I will ever own one, for if I buy one on the secondary market I would be rewarding the large prepurchasers, and I refuse to do that.

What I read is that dealers at the Baltimore Show (I think) were paying people to stand in line and buy for them, and they were submitting large orders directly to the grading services. I don't know if it's true or not, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I was over them before they were released. They are gimmicky and remind me of some of the crap that other mints around the world put out. I hope this is a one off thing for the mint.

I just checked the NGC Census, and they have already graded 1,164 MS and 2,636 PF. Anybody know how many PCGS has graded?

Lol, yeah. The first thing I thought of when I saw them was the Somalian guitar "coins". Maybe I am just convincing myself why I don't want one at this point. :(

My outlook was "Who Cares?", even before they announced the new HOF issue in the firstplace.

I don't buy or sell any of these limited edition coins . . . as collectibles go, they're no better than any of the other contrived rarities . . . the attrition of such items will be negligible, and the spread between highest and lowest quality of available specimens will be meaningless, regardless of how much time passes.

Do these coins have a future? Sure they do . . . near term as money pits for unwary speculators, and long term as as bullion pieces, trading very near spot.

Been "Who cares" for a long time, stopped buying from the Mint in 1977. Last thing I bought was a three piece silver Bicentennial proof set.

I received my ten silver proof coins in the mail yesterday. I already sold four of them for $75 each to co-workers, and I will put three to five up for sale on FeeBay tonight for $85 each. (I haven't decided yet if I want to keep just one for the family, or one for each kid.)

I put in one mint order each year for the same thing - 2 mint sets, 2 proof sets and 2 silver proof sets. One of each set to crack open to put into 2x2's, and 1 set put away just in case I end up with a grandchild that takes up the hobby (too late for my own kids, I'll have to wait for the next generation to have someone to play with). All of my commemoratives were either gifts or half dollars I pulled from circulation.

I completely agree. The reverse of the coin is not bad (baseball), but the big cartoonish baseball mitt is simply unattractive. Why not put a picture of the HOF building on the front of the coin? Or two baseball bats crossed in the background with a baseball diamond in the center? Something with more detail especially given the size of the coin. Meh.

I got tired after seeing the 37th HOF thread. People's fuzzy little heads exploded when these came out. Anytime a product's value is based on hype - backed by impatience -you better steer clear. Ever hear of those people who pay thousands for the newest console, just so they can have it 3 days early? I digress.

Of all the non coin collecting baseball fans I've shown (and sold) the coin to, they all "ooh" and "ahh" over the cupped baseball mitt side of the coin.

I guess it isn't all about catering to the coin collecting crowd, but to the greater population.

I just received my proof Dollars yesterday. If you like classic coins, they're definitely not going to appeal to you, but they are actually pretty nice and are perfect to fill the "modern silver Dollar" hole in my 7070 type set.

I'm thinking that even if they fill the hole, they'll block you from closing the cover...?

Well, I'll admit I'm a little perturbed regarding the mints' handling of things with the HOF coins but I shouldn't be. This scenario has always been the case for mint products that are popular (hyped?). Remember the UHR St. Gaudens (2009)? My order for that piece was constantly being pushed back day by day on a regular basis. I ordered it the first day it was offered (in January) and didn't receive it till mid-March. There was much fanfare and anticipation for the ASE 25th anniversary set and a lot of people were disappointed when they were locked out of the offering due to high numbers of collectors and dealers wanting them. In both cases there was a lot of hanky panky with people getting their orders cancelled. With regard to the latter case people were fuming and I know the mint must have been inundated with huge amounts of hate mail because the next time an ASE set was released, ordering limits were put in place. But that wasn't good enough because on the next offering the eagle that everybody thought was going to be exclusive to the set was offered later in the year in a currency set. Collectors hoping to cash in on the set were disappointed.

In conclusion, we're all just a bunch of cry babies. We'll never be happy with what the mint does or in the way it handles and ships it's products. We'll always complain and whine about the fact that'I didn't get this', or 'there's a little ding on an uncirculated coin'. They can't please us. They never will either........
