I bought a coin once from one of those "mint" companies (GovMint, NewYorkMint, etc.) and am now on their permanent mailing lists, which means I get a catalog or two about every month. I could easily tell them to stop sending the catalogs, but they are so beautiful, interesting, and educational. I actually learn a lot about coins that are not necessarily my major interests. I love the embellished stories about the coins. Their prices are horrible, but I'm glad they consider me a prospect. Anybody else feel the same way?
When a collector mentor passed away, I gathered the catalogs from his collection. I now have 8 notes from that collection that can be referenced back to Thomas Flynn through these masterpieces prepared by some of the finest catalogers in the business. I have at least 10 that I keep for permanent reference. RickieB
They got nice pics of coins that are way too expensive for me. I used to save them, but since I've got the computer, I throw them away.
I agree that they can be educational, but when I get them now I look through and then just recycle them. TC
Hmmmm - apparently you guys are unaware that coin catalogs (real ones, not the junk from the NY Mint and the like) often appreciate in value even better than coins do. And very, very, rarely do they ever go down in value. In fact, I don't know of a single one that ever has.
I'll usually pick up a few Heritage catalogs every year. They're fun to look through and they're free. The problem is they always intice me to place bids. Guess thats their purpose though. Guy~
I have a few for notes/coins & stamps from a few of the auctions that I would like to have bid on LOL they are quite often full of realy useful info and of course the pics
I'm a supplier (ink) to the printing industry, keep getting the catalogs and help keep some people employed! That said, you should keep getting them; the more you can learn the better off you are. You never know when the knowledge will come in handy and potentially profitable.
I save most of my large auction ones. Quite a Heritage collection now. It's good to go back and see the history of some of those and you can sometimes find your own in there
I have over 600 Auction catalogs from over the years. I love em! I have what will fit in 2 book shelves in the front of the shop. The rest are packed away till I can get more. This is some of the greatest reference material when you find some rare or obscure coins.
New York Mint does have some fun catalogs...I save the ones I like. I purchase their exclusively developed coins and medals as I like that stuff...don't care about resale etc. But keep in mind New York Mint is the same company now as Gov Mint...they are part of Asset Marketing in Minnesota. Asset used to offer telemarketing services to smaller coin collectible producers. Asset would then offer those customers products under the name "Preferred Customer Club" Some very nice world coins were developed by them..their wooden cases were also works of art made in USA. The nice cases are gone these days but still some cool pieces. This is a $300 Million Company and has a following. I would be interested in purchasing some of their old brochure mailings. There is certainly no other company that competes on the same level.
