Hey anybody buy this set? I just ordered a couple, did I make a bad purchase, ho-hum or smart buy? The Kennedy is 90%? Looked too good to pass up! http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=16808&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10120
The set looks nice but I think its overpriced, seems like they just decided to throw some left overs together. You are paying over double melt value, seems high for items that don't have a lot of numismatic value.
Complete rip-off. I did some math, and the cost of a 2012 silver proof set plus a 2012 ASE would be $20 less than what this sells for, so you're essentially paying $20 for the packaging. (Plus you'd get less coins, as you wouldn't get the penny, nickel, and the Native American and president dollars.) Nothing wrong with the coins, but this set is basically a packaging scam by the mint. You can get exactly the same coins cheaper than what this set costs. As for investment, you're paying about double what the silver in the coins is worth. No offense to you, but that doesn't seem like a good buy any way you look at it.
This item is a bit perplexing to me. It is basically the 2012 ASE silver proof and the 2012 annual silver proof set (minus the non-silver coins) into one product with unique packaging. Both of the other items are now sold out at the Mint and selling for a premium. If you missed out on thse other two offerings, this would be the item to get now. I heard the TPGs may produce special labels which may interest some people but not me. TC
I agree with the above posters. I purchased a 2012 silver proof set on monday and after tax it was around $103 That purchase was well worth it, this set however seems like a waste of money. All my opinion of course.
Except even now you can get the sum total of all of these coins cheaper than this set costs. And I couldn't care less what labels TPGs put on coins out of this set. A set is worth no more than the coins it contains, period. A TPG saying a given coin came from this set doesn't add a single penny to the coin's value. (If anything, breaking coins out of the set loses any distinction it ever had from coming from some different set. Not that the distinction ever meant anything in the first place.)
Glad I had the option to cancel my order. I should have done my research before I ordered. # Item Cancelled Cancel Reason 1 LS1 2 10 CUSTOMER CHANGED MIND 2012 LIMITED EDITION SILVER PR
So $149.95 + $5 shipping - $103..... So basically if you just bought the LE Silver Proof Set (with the $20 cool looking packaging), you could have got the West Point ASE proof for $51.95? Unless of course you are one of the "I got to get my hands on them ultra popular Presidential proofs" type of people... At this point in time ('12 silver proof set sold out), what seems even more worth it to me, is what the OP purchased :smile edit: or at least purchased before they canceled against it...
Excuse my lack of intelligence but I don't understand your post. I paid $103 for 5 quarters, 4 presidentials and a half, dime, penny, nickel, native dollar. Seems like more coins to me than that set.
Not trying to offend... Just saying, the 2012 ASE West Point coin could have been obtained for another $51.95 shipped, with the LE set... It's is selling on the secondary market for $80 right now http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-W-American-Silver-Eagle-Proof-/271073334612?pt=Bullion_US&hash=item3f1d3ad554. Yes, you did get more coins...
Alright, time to play devils advocate... I think these could be a smart buy because of the packaging and limited availability. Yes, it is overpriced for what it is selling for right now, but lets look at the Lincoln Chronicles set. 4 copper cents and one Silver Comm., sold for $55.95 originally(basically double the PM value)and not just a few years later they are commanding prices almost double that amount, if not more. At $149.95 (and the same mintage of 50,000 units as the LC), they will sell out and then down the road people will probably like to add it to their set. It could be a big win, or a big bust depending on how the public swings.
I agree with what you said. I was just playing a little devils advocate too, in pointing out the long term result with the Legacy set. And though I called the Limited Edition set redundant, that's no reason for someone not to buy this set if they really like it. After all, I liked the Legacy sets and even though they have decreased in value after leaving the mint I'm still happy to have them in my collection. The crap shoot for me with them was, "will they go up in price in the aftermarket"? I didn't want to take the chance. Sometimes ya win and sometimes ya lose, but I bought 'em to collect......not to make money.
There's nothing in that set that's unique to the set. Perhaps they should have included a 2012-S eagle, so all the coins would be S minted at least The 2 coin guys were offering these last night on TV for $259, IIRC.
I wonder if this set is a test for future silver proof sets. I would like to see the non silver coins only available in the clad proof set.
