I have been thinking of getting into some world crowns maybe 1800's or early 1900's and doing kind of a type set of the different world crowns. Amyone else kind of do a type set of these? Where did you start? Did you find an album for these?
Sounds like a cool collecting idea. I'm not sure an "album" would exist for such a collection as the diameter of "crown-sized" coins can vary from country to country. Anywhere from say 35mm to 38mm (or a bit wider) are possibilities. Were you going to focus on particular countries or a single continent? I have heard of others doing this, and it would make for a very interesting and well rounded collection! I'm guessing you already did a standard Google Search, but this webpage is an interesting starting place. There is also a standard reference, "Standard Catalog of World Crowns and Talers: From 1601 to Date- Including the Early Continental European Listings"
some many countries to list. Buy some Krause World Coin Catalogs. go page to page to see what interests you. make a list. do a Ebay search on world coins "crowns".
Crown collecting has always been an established collecting area. You certainly have LOTS to choose from, worldwide, lots of precious metal, overwhelmingly silver. The traditional diameter standard for a crown-sized coin is 38mm or larger. You also must know that some of the finest coin designs were always reserved for the crown-sized denomination as the highest form of numismatic art.
here Ebay link to "crowns" link: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Coins-World-/256/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=crowns&_sop=3 8,000+ to start.... enjoy.
Crown size pieces are what I focus on, primary Holy Roman Empire Talers. Not very expensive in the lower grades, yet tend to be quite pricey as the quality is higher. Designs are quite attractive and artistic in the 16-18th century material and tends to be more "modern" in the 19th century and beyond. Have a look at my sigline to get a feel.
I am partial to a lot of the UK ones, I am a big fan of any Brittania designs. Its just a big thing to tackle was wondering if others did it and where did you start.
From your words, the obvious start would be some UK crowns of Victoria or the kings just before and after. Victoria has several portraits of which the Jubilee is probably most popular. The Britannia reverse is found on coppers of the period but St. George is OK with me and better than the shields seen on some others. As always, price is condition. Worn ones like the above are not expensive.
Yea I was looking at a few of those jubilee coins on ebay I really like the design. I been doing a little more research this thread helped me I think I will stick with 38mm for now I mean there is much to choose from that is a good starting point plus I can pick up a blank dansco album in that and kind of make my own type album. My wife picked up this little placard from a yard sale that has the irish coins in it and it has a half crown, I kind of like it was thinking those little placards might be fun like grab one from UK and some other countries. Something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/251590501869?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 I have been doing a world bullion collection was thinking adding a crowns set would be fun. I am just a big type collector and my 7070 is almost done and I have done two twentieth century whitman type sets for my boys. Was thinking of trying to make my own world type sets and bullion sets as I love type coins. And crowns were suggested to me seemed like a great idea.
This has become quite the big research project for me. The Uk ones were clearly the easiest to find out about but a lot of the other countries and what else to include is ended up being a massive learning experience. Dansco makes a crowns of the world album that would be perfect it comes with a 36mm, 38mm, 39mm, 40mm and a 42mm page. Clearly you could add other pages. I was thinking I would also add my world bullion collection to the album and then add crowns kind of a fun cross reference. Like you could do a 1890's Jubilee crown and then have the modern Brittania bullion coin. You could do a 1940's Canadian silver dollar and then have the maple leaf bullion coin. Problem is the dimensions on a lot of the coins for example the New Zealand Crown is 38.61mm so would you try and cram that in the 38mm page or have it loosely sit in the 39mm page. Same say with the Silver Eagle thats 40.66mm do you try and fit it in the 40mm page or do you buy a 41mm page. Anyway know of way to add a little filler so a coin wouldn't slide if you went up to the bigger page. I mean my list is very rudimentary right now as I don't know enough about crowns yet. I mean what kind of crowns is everyone else doing Crowns so far that I am thinking of adding to the list UK New Zealand Canadian Dollar Morgan Dollar Mexico Peso Japanese Yen German 5mark Crown France 5frank piece Guatemala Peso Peru Sol Silver Bullion Silver Eagle Maple Leaf Libertad Panda Philharmonic Kookaburra Koala Lunar Kangaroo Brittania Taku (turtle) Kiwi Noahs Ark Ship Wild Elephant Springbrok Eagle Suriname Cheetah George the Victorious
What is up with the 36mm page in the crowns of the world dansco album so far I have only found one coin that is 36mm and that is the old Canadian silver dollars. They would have been better off with a 37mm page that at least fits the Peruvian Sol and the Austrian Philharmonic and you could have tried to buffer the Canadian dollar in there at the 36mm. It's now a work in progress spirityoda, first things first is the album as I already have a number of the World bullion coins. Also going to need to get additional pages thinking of just ditching that idiotic 36mm page and going with a 37 and trying to buffer what few 36mm coins I find. I just wanted another type set now that my 7070 is nearly complete and I don't like doing the same coin over and over so while I love Walking Liberty halves or Standing Liberty quarters or buffalo nickels I get bored collecting the same coin over and over.
and this is why I love World coins so much.... huge variety. Peruvian sol coins are beautiful in higher grades.
I'm probably going to stick to around a VF-XF grade, I want nice circulated coins that you can still see the designs for plus it doesn't jump the set to much in cost and you can keep it uniform. What I don't get is the spanish piece of 8 or the reel, I mean there should be tons of these as it was widely held as the most acceptable coin for several centuries yet the the cost of them is crazy. It's why I didn't add it to my list as I need to get my two seated dollars for my 7070 before I consider other costly coins.
seated dollars are expensive. Spanish pieces of 8 are pricey because everybody wants 1. high grade Peruvian sol in a common date are not that much money. it's the scarcer dates that get expensive.
