Hi All, I have come into posession of a few silver dollars, anyone tell me if there is any value to these: 1796, 1804 and 1865 Silver Dollars. Im in the UK and finding it difficult to get any info on these, which I will attempt to upload photos of.
They're probably all fakes. The 1804 Silver Dollar is one of the rarest and most popular of all American coins. If genuine, would be worth millions of dollars. But of course, the Chinese are producing everything these days and that is most likely where your speciman originated.
Fake. DO they have "COUNTERFEIT" or "COPY" stamped around the edges? Counterfeit coins without markings indicated that they are indeed fake are normally illegal in the US.
Thanks all. Ive found some info on spotting fakes and with the 1804 theres a lot in relation to the size of the stars either side of the coin, so im guessing that im not going to be a millionaire with that one. What about the 1796, as far as i can tell the info would suggest that lettering size, style etc may mean this one is real? Any thoughts or any value if it is real?
Try using a magnet on them. Silver is not magnetic. Of course, they could be made of another metal that isn't magnetic, but if they are magnetic, then there is no doubt that they are fake.
Look at the edges. If the 1796 has a reeded edge it is a fake. (And I am 99.9999942% sure it is a fake.) If the 1804 has a reeded edge that does not necessarily mean it is a fake (because some of the genuine 1804 Dollars were struck in a collar) but the odds are 99.99999998% that your coin is a fake. The 1865 should have a reeded edge. If you can accurately weigh the coin it should weigh 26.73 grams if it is genuine. On the reverse there should not be a ribbon above the eagle with the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST". Also, look for a mintmark on the reverse (just below the eagle); if there is a mintmark the coin is fake. Definately counterfiet according to photo's. The chinese are known for this and it's getting rediculous!
