Can't find much on this one, but my resources are still pretty limited.

I've been browsing around online, and (at this point) I'm starting to think that this is a german notgeld coin (?).

I should add that it seems to be aluminum or tin - very light

Rick,it is a German Notgeld piece. These very interesting pieces were in use as emergency tokens
due to the shortage of official German coins. The same situation applied to Austria & to France & Belgium.

    That's what I thought. Thanks.

Do you know of any online resources that might lend me some information on this piece?

Try typing in 'German Notgeld Collectors' Club' into Google & see what results you may get.

Not a clue - but given the design, I'd check German colonies.

this is a 1 Pfennig Notgeld coin, Bavaria, City of Hof, 1918

There were also 10 and 50 Pfennig coins, zinc, zinc/nickel plated, iron (ferrum)

In 1920 they only had 50 Pfennig coins.

Welcome to the forum antidote. Our international membership is really growing.
    Translated by Babelfish as:
    • Cat 1 and 2: German emergency coins and other cash indemnity marks
    • Cat 3: German-language emergency coins and cash indemnity marks abroad
    • Cat 4: Emergency coins and cash indemnity marks of Bavaria
    • Cat 5: Emergency coins and cash indemnity marks of Baden, Wuerttemberg and Hohenzollern

Those books sound invaluable to a notgeld collector. Are they still in publication? Are they well enough illustrated to be of any use to those of us who are illiterate in the German language?

These books are indeed standard literature. If, just if you are lucky you can find them on sale somewhere.

To get get started with Notgeld the books by WALTER FUNCK will do.

    take a look at http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/se...ield-author=Funck, Walter/028-8617987-0522914

"Die Notmünzen der deutschen Städte, Gemeinden, Kreise, Länder 1916 - 1921" (2 books) & "Die privaten deutschen Notmünzen 1916 - 1921" will be enough to start with. These are catalogues similar to Krause Mishler World Coins. Even if you do not speak any German you will find them to be very helpfull (Babelfish will be able able to translate the few German words you'll need)

There's no need to buy these catalogues - if any Notgeld coins need to be identified just post a pic and send a PN. I'll try to help.
