It looks like a repunched mint mark to me. It's not listed in the cherrypicker's guide.

It definitely appears to be a 1940-S/S (RPM Error) and possibly a 1940-S/S/S but I can't tell from pictures. I couldn't determine the orientation of the Mint Marks either. There are 9 different RPM's for 1940-S Cent in Coneca. Go to "www.conecaonline.org" and click on Variety Master Listings then click on the RPM's for the appropriate year. Compare yours to the one's listed to see if it matches up and you will know the Coneca # for it. If yours does not match any on the list, then it may be unlisted and can be submitted to Coneca for verification, attribution and entry into their' files. I have a both a 1940-S/S and a 1940-S/S/S Lincoln Cent. I don't remember what the Coneca # is for my S/S but my S/S/S is not listed. I really need to get this stuff cataloged and sent in for verification but it always seems that something else comes uo and I get sidetracked.

My best guess after comparing your pix to the ones in my RPM book is that it is RPM #1.
