Hello! I'm new to this group, so first off thanks for allowing me to join. I found this 1970-S roll hunting and was wondering if this is a form of die wear or doubling? It doesn't show any of the same features in the lettering of the obverse side of the coin, and seems to be only isolated to the date. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you!

Alurid, Thank you for the information! I figured it was something other than a true DDO. I didn't know about the other forms of doubling until now. It appears there is a wealth of knowledge and resources on here I can use for reference. Oh, and I'm sorry I should have asked in the original post. I'm thinking this is Large Date as well. Any opinions on date size? Thanks again!

I agree with the Large Date variety.

First, welcome to the neighborhood, Joe!

Actually, it looks like die deterioration doubling to me rather than machine doubling. Either way, it is a common "ailment" coming from the US Mint.

Also, you might want to save this image for reference about Large Date/Small Date comparisons.

I will have to agree with Chris. Your coin will fall under a Die Error as opposed to an Machine Error.

...imo, it is the result of both deterioration of the working die and MD. The date and mintmark are slimmer than normal, both effects contribute to this result.

I agree it is a large date, the end loop of the 9 points to the bottom of the 7...we don’t have a view of LIBERTY to analyze.
