I work at a grocery store and from time to time we get an old 60's/70's bill or two. For example I found a Chicago 1963-B dollar yesterday in choice uncirculated. I'm not a paper money collector (although i am working on getting a dollar from each series since 63. Have all the years but missing some series(es)). Basically I just want to know if there is any reason to keep any of these. I doubt I would hold onto them long. I primarily have coins so I'd probably sell them. Anyways, any reason?
The 1963b series is called a 'Barr' note after the treasurey secertary Joseph Barr. He is the shortest serving secretary at 1 month, from Dec 21 1968 to Jan 20 1969. These notes can carry some premium because the series was not produced in as large numbers as others. They were also saved at the time, which is my guess as to why you found one in good condition, someone saved this note a while ago because it was a Barr note and decieded to spend it. You did not say if it was a star note, but if so these go for around $30 uncirculated. Here are a couple links to regular notes on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/US-CURRENCY-1963B-1-BARR-FRN-OLD-PAPER-MONEY-CU-/400055018435?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d252323c3 Here is a link to a recently closed auction which brought $5 for uncirculated: http://cgi.ebay.com/US-CURRENCY-1963B-1-BARR-FRN-OLD-PAPER-MONEY-CU-/400055018435?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d252323c3 If it is circulated, meaning even a small bend/crease, then it is probably worth face value. Either way a very cool find, and it's just a dollar, it would be a keeper for me.
