Any of you folks make the same mistake over and over again?

So, my current weekly Doh! is putting a placeholder bid on a coin to track it and then winning at a cost I really did not want to pay. The last few weeks, I have thrown bids on some lots that seemed interesting and that I wanted to come back and research. Most were at the edge of the value, but not full retail, and I have won several of these. You'd think I'd learn to just watch something. I always feel like I don't pay as much attention to the coin/lot if I haven't put a bid on it and always forget about the coins I'm just watching.

Oh geez yes.... My "DOHH" is different but every bit as... well, DOHH.... When I get in my mind I have to have a particular piece, I obsess to the point I will make agree to a poor deal or over react to a lesser quality piece than if I would take a more patient and cautioned approach. Yeah, I have bought a few zingers in my day due to my obsessive DOHH moments.

Have you ever considered using a sniping service to manage the bidding for you? If you see a coin that you like, you can post the item number and bid amount with the sniping service. However, since the bid is not placed until just before the end of the auction, you can elect to delete it at any time beforehand.

I can truly say I have never experienced this. I come from a region in which auctions are culturally treated with a nearly religious affinity. He who doesn't do auctions well, doesn't do well at all. We are taught from a very young age how to bid with discipline, because one of the most insulting things that can be said of one is that he is an "overbidder". Even a huge percentage of real estate in my home area is sold at auction, and not through realtors.

Yes. I for some reason still click on the "Error Coins" Forum here at CoinTalk.

If you are winning several , maybe you are bidding too much to start.

Jim, by my reading, that is what the OP was suggesting. I know that when I want to be reminded that an auction is ending, I either just do a "Watch" or bid a sure-to-lose amount. He seems to have been trying to do a "kinda lowish" strategy, and then having buyer's remorse.

Yes, except it's not a strategy. Since there are a gazillion items at auction at any one time, I am throwing a token bid (seemingly below market value) on the ones I want to revisit when I have time. The next time I think about some of these bids is when I get the congratulations email.

I'd go REAL low, not just SEEMINGLY BELOW market value. Even that gets you enhanced communications.

Dillan The sky is the limit !

Most auctions will have a place where you can have then notify you when your interests come close to being auctioned off , I used that method and when the notifications came in I would check the bids on the item. Have a set amount your willing to pay , and if the bids are at or over forget it . More then likely another similar coin will come along with another chance to get it for your price. Patience will save you a lot of money .Good luck with your future bidding.
