Hi, everyone...I have a question...Is coin thickness any concern? I just found 3 pennies while roll hunting that are thicker on one side than they are on the other... 1984 -- 1.24mm -- 1.45mm... 1988 -- 1.30mm -- 1.48mm... 1973 -- 1.35mm -- 1.58mm... Thanks ahead of time for any advise!
Probably the result of a slightly misaligned die strike. The difference is probably within tolerance for the mint, but I don't know what those tolerances are. IMO a difference so small as to need a precision instrument to measure it isn't very interesting though. :/
I'd bet they have some kind of internal manufacturing tolerance. I'd also bet a 0.2mm difference is well within it.
Gotta admire your attention to detail! Thats pretty intense! I wouldn't even begin to know what to use to measure such small differences. Kinda cool.
Thanks everyone for clearing that up....I certainly appreciate your help! To the_girls, Thank you and I was using a electric digital caliper...Not too expensive, I bought mine from Amazon for around $15
The worst coins for variations on thickness are the 1993 cents, a lot of them run thick and if I had a way to accurately weigh them I would bet they way a smidge more. I have several dozen from roll searches that rejected from coin machines when I took cents back after I was done with them.
