Have this 1971 S proof Ike dollar but can't determine what type it is. My best guess is it's a Type 2 based on the way the earth looks on the reverse. I can't find a similar packaging on Google images, looks like there's a thin film on the coin inside the rim. Is that what it means when it says "sealed" ?
Here, where? Earth? If there's more than one type of 1971-S proof Ike, it's a new one on me. The 1972 Philly has 3 types, and the 1776-1976 has 2 types. AFAIK, that's all.
I don't think this one matches ANY of the 1972 moon types, but if pressed, I'd say it's closest to the 2.
Oh, that might be the DIVa attribution 1S1-601. http://www.ikegroup.info/?page_id=1138 http://www.ikegroup.info/DIVA listings/1971 S Proof/1S1-601.pdf
Here's the article : https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/3289/Proof-Type-1-Reverse-1971-S-Ike-Dollar/
I'm confused by that NGC article. What they picture as a 1971 Type 1 earth sure does look like a 1972 Type 2 earth. I give up for now.
Unless it's a lighting artifact in your photo, that coin may have developed some hazing on the surface, not a good thing. Plastic is permeable and it may have been subjected to the elements outside of it.
The moon picture on the NGC article does NOT match a Type 1 reverse, nor does it match the moon on the ikegroup illustration, which DOES match a Type 1. The key is the islands off Florida. Yours is soooooooooo not a Type 1.
These are EXTREME RARITIES. Unless you KNOW they've been hidden away for years, they've already been searched.
I believe it's the film on the coin, I don't know why they have a film over the coin at all. I'm curious because if I send this to PCGS, would they have to remove the film to grade it? Just to be clear, I won't be having it graded tho just curious. I think it's a type II and not worth the fee.
I'm really not sure about how or if it's possible to remove the film. I'll let others chime in about possible methods they may have used. I really do not have much experience with this type of problem and I don't want to lead you in the wrong direction.
