I just want to put it out there to all of you for ideas of source. I am drive a couple hundred miles to my new home location and wanted to keep my coins safe in transit from being stolen or damge in the unlikely event of car accident with a fire.

    Thanks for you Feedback!

How large is your collection? Would it take up several shipping boxes, say 1' x 1' x 1-1/2'? You could always have it shipped to your new address. If you submitted it to FedEx the same day you leave, you would arrive before it. Just make sure that you have FedEx get a signature for the delivery. That way, they can't just drop it at the door.

The collection would probibly fit in that size of a box. That is good...I didn't think of that. Only problem it I have not found a place to rent yet. I have no address on the other side of thing.
    Thanks for the input!!

Put them in a fireproof safe with a strong lock. My grandma has one where she keeps important papers

You might inquire at FedEx to see if they have some sort of "will call" where you can have it shipped to their faciltity, they can hold it there and when you arrive and find a place, you can go to their office in the new city to claim it. If they do, be sure to get the address of the FedEx office in the new city (just trying to cover all bases).

Another good idea....Why do you say FedEx and not USPS regestered mail with insurance?

+1. FedEx is probably the best choice.

With USPS, you would have to have a delivery address, even if it was a PO Box. Without an address, they can't accept it.

ok...but why is FedEx the better safety choice?

The last time I used UPS was a few years ago. I was expecting a $2000 order of coins. I was home the day they delivered it, but they just dumped it on the porch and left. Ordinarily, we didn't use the front door because we had a side door that went through a breezeway into the garage. If it hadn't been for the fact that a neighbor decided to stop by, it might have sat there for a day or more. I haven't used UPS since.

Unless you have private insurance, I'd stay away from FedEx or UPS... send it USPS Registered Mail or USPS Express Mail... insurance is relatively cheap on either option and you can buy insurance up to $25,000 from the post office.

If you don't have an address or P.O. box to send it to then maybe get it to a friend or family member who could ship it to you when you do have your address and PO box?? Or, just put it all in a safe deposit box at a bank where you live now... then come back and get it at a later date when you know your address and when you're not rushed into moving the collection.

FDX does the same dang thing. They drop and run. These guys are under tremendous pressure to get rid of packages and not bring anything back to the station. Sending out a package a second or third time costs the delivery company money, so anything that doesn't have a "signiture" sticker on it is just droped at the front door.

If you use FedEx better hope nothing happens because neither FedEx nor UPS insure coins. So if they got lost or damaged you would be out of luck

    .
You can insure up to $25K with Registered mail. Maximum for all other forms of mail is $5K. Why? Because Registered is so much safer, they are willing to insure to higher values. The insurance rates are much lower on Registered mail as well once the value exceeds about $700.

As far as an address to ship it to, can you get a PO Box in the area you are moving to? You might be able to do that from your current location. If so you can ship it to that box and they will keep it safely under lock and key until you arrive for it. Registered mail is pretty much the safest way to ship anything small and valuable.

OK I defiantly have a better idea on the shipping route.....Thanks guys!!!

Now, What do you think about options for taking it with me in my car safely? Have a safe attached to the car? Camo it's location? What should I put them in besides a safe?

Your suggesting it's only a couple of hundred miles. No more than one days drive in a few hours. Drive safely and don't leave your vehicle unattended. I fondly remember having that type of adventurous spirit, only when I made moves like these, and I had a few times, the total traveling distance was well over thousands of miles. I recall packing my 65 ford falcon , just clothes and other small belongings and starting to travel without a clear destination in mind. The travel took me from Redondo Beach CA to the Great State Of Texas , where I finally stopped and decided to rent an apartment. I wound up staying in Texas for almost 21 years. Now if I were 40 years younger, I don't think I would endeavor to make such a move today. My throwing caution to wind traveling days have been long over and I am not as adventuresome as I was than.

Honestly, I see no problem with transporting them in your car. It's only 200 miles. It's pretty hard to get into an accident in that short distance unless you're a terrible driver. All you need to do is buy a couple of those bumper stickers, "This car is protected by Smith & Wesson."

Coinman beat me to it. I'll echo him. Just go about your normal routine and you should be fine.

You should be able to make 200 miles in 2-1/2 hours with no need for pitstops or gas.

Yet your OP said a couple of hundred miles. Are you traveling by mule train? Are you going to jog?
