I was at an antique shop last week and I saw in a case a bronze medal with FDR on it and it was from the 1934 World's Fair. The price tag was only $14 and I'm kind of kicking myself for not buying it (although I must believe it's still there) ... It looked in superb shape, but I have a rule to never buy what I'm not sure of or things I am not educated on. Does anybody have an idea if that medal was worth anything? Anything World's Fair seems like it has to be worth something since that was such a huge cultural event in its time. Any help or directions to more information would be greatly appreciated. Esky
Yeah, I bet they meant 1939 and listed as 1934 on accident. As I research this more and more - 1934 would be impossible hehehe Esky
Sounds like the Lucky Tilicum coin. It's a small white metal piece with FDR and 1934 on the obverse and a map of the US on the reverse with Lucky Roosevelt Trail. It's quite common and is usually found in AU or better. It might be worth $14 in excellent shape in the case of issue. Otherwise you can pick it up for a few dollars. There are at least two different varieties.
I don't have a listing for that specific medal, and all I have is rather outdated value guides, but here is what I have. From Alpert and Elman's Tokens and Medals 1992 guide, the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair medals fall into one of three catagories - silver, palladium, and other. The "other" types were listed as being valued in the $1.50 to $3.00 range.
