Hey People - I found this oddity in a penny bag. It appears to be like an around the world CUD on this penny. I looked at my broadstrikes and they are just different than this. There is a nice regular CUD on the reverse by United that covers the U ... and a decent one on the 3 o'clock position. I've never seen a coin with a rim like this before and it covers the whole rim front and back. The coin itself is not in the greatest shape - but this rim stuff is definitely something wrong like an error and not damage I think anyway ... deducing that the CUD over the U looks natural and not like somebody playing "Let's Damage The Money" game. Any help in identifying / and determining what the value of this error might be would be appreciated. Like I say - after checking nearly a half million pennies, this is definitely a first in errors for me. If it's a good find, I can take more pictures ... Like I say this goes all the way around the rim front and back. Kind of unique. Take Care - Esky
It appears that all that you see on the coin, the thicker and wider rim and cuds, are actually man made! Some folks call this the spoon technique, where someone beats the rim with a spoon to widen the rim. This was done ti silver coins in years past and is still done by some that make rings out of the silver coins. For what reason someone would beat a penny down like this, who knows! Frank
Hey Frank - I don't think this is spooned. I have seen spooned quarters - but this seems different. The CUDs are lumpy - like someone dripped hot metal and it cooled. Also the edges are rough. However, maybe it's possible this thing got stuck in a machine somehow ?? But I tell ya the CUD on the reverse is very decent. Hard to imagine this being made by damage. Esky
