Any good ways to identify marks?

Most of the coins I look at, I can clearly see that it is a mark BELOW the surface but there are a LOT that cannot tell if the mark is ABOVE the surface or BELOW.
If I turn the coin in one direction, I swear it ABOVE the surface. Then I rotate it a little bit and it looks BELOW the surface! Yikes! I have three magnifying glasses and they all give me the same result! I will attach a photo of a 2001 penny that I THINK is a die crack and not a surface crack. Any tip will help.

A die crack will be raised. A surface crack, well I guess I don't know what you mean.
