We will soon begin a new year.

I always like to look at coins that are celebrating a centennial birthday.

Here are three coins of mine celebrating a tricentennial birthday next year (not my pictures):

    Medal1717Grace.jpg Medal1717Gracer.jpg

The first coin is a British 1717 farthing known as a dump farthing for its small size. It was both smaller and thicker than the typical previous farthing.

Similarly, the second coin is a dump halfpenny (despite being incorrectly labeled as 1/4 P or farthing on the slab label).

Finally, the medal presented, "The Act of Grace," represents the magnanimity shown by George I. He judiciously gave a pardon to most the Jacobite rebels after the failed Jacobite uprising in 1715 (known as The Fifteen). Because he was from Germany, George I was viewed by many as not only a foreigner, but also a usurper. He hoped to win support for his reign with his leniency.

The reverse of the medal is inscribed with the "Clemency of the King." A winged image of Clemency is supposed to be the personification of the (relatively) benevolent government of George I. She calms the serpent (the image for rebellion) with a caduceus.

So, I will soon wish these coins a Happy 300th birthday and all of you a Happy and Healthy 2017. Stay thirsty (for coins), my friends.

I have 39 coins from 1917 in my collection US and World. 2017 is the 100th anniversary of US entry in WW1 and also JFK's birth.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I know it's cheating, but this is the closest I've got. This here's an 1818 Bust half, but she's a special one: the 1818 is punched over an 1817. You can see it in the last digit. JPA874 obverse.jpg JPA874 reverse.jpg
