I found this in a bag of wheats. Is there any chance this happened at the mint or do you think it was later damaged.

I could be a strike through error, but is most likely damage. If it is damaged, it has been there for a long time. Wait for Mikediamond or foundinrolls to chime in.

Can you post a pic of the reverse? It could be a lamination.

Looks like somebody has tried to put MIA on it. I remember years ago seeing a coin that somebody had made a die and was stamping it on pennies. just a thought.

    Hi,
I played around with it in a photo program and it looks like some kind of counterstamp. Is there a flattened area on the reverse under the spot where this stamping is? It is not an error . It occured after the minting process.
I'm just not sure what was done.
    Thanks,
    Bill

I think that I used to have one of those cents with MIA stamped into them. The Kennedy stamped ones used to come in a vending machine bubble with a piece of paper listing the coincidences between Kennedy and Lincoln.

This is simply post mint damage, nothing more.

Modifying coins is not a new thing. Do a search on eBay for "love token" and you will see that people have been doing the same thing to coins for hundreds of years. Other popular things are elongated cents and encased cents. None of these have any real numismatic value.
