My wife and I went to a auction we try to attend : They were about in the miidle of selling the furniture , we had been there already 4hrs. They started auctioning coins, of course everyone was bidding high, MORGANS, PEACE , BUFFALOS ETC. 800 WHEATS went for $42.00 , at the final item, they announced they had a ziplock of jefferson nickels pre 1960s they checked before the ziplock was stapled shut They started at, $10.00,I made the first bid there was 2 of us bidding , I hate coming home from the auction empty handed with no coins, the ziplock was filthy, I finaly made a bid of $21.00 This is what I found , Ihave not even looked them up in the book yet. 1938 1 1939 5 1940S 3 1940 2 1940D 1 1941S 3 1941D 1 1942 3 1949 1 1952S 3 1953 1 1954 1 1956D 2 1957d 1 1958 1 I figured that I take chances on rools of change, I had the same odds. this is a sale they have every JAN. 1st. every year, I also got some great deals on furniture also. Their next sale is jan. 10th hya: Icant wait they have some more misc. coins adv.Sometimes when I wait patiently It pays off:whistle:
Thats a lot of money to pay for $1.45. I think when the bag of what I'm sure were 40's wheats sold for $42 I would have left for greener pastures. Guy~

Can't you look at the coins in the bag before the auction to see what is in there or is it strictly a pig-in-a-poke deal?
I think those two statement sums it up - you might not have showed patience this time. I really believe patience is the key. The few in person estate type auctions I have been to the prices have been ridiculous.

Early Jeffersons have to be in really good shape before they're worth much above face value. I'm guessing these were well circulated? You've got 0.72 a piece in them. There are quite a few from the 50s that are still in circulation. I run across them once in a while. If you had fun and wanted them, then so be it. You're not out much. Although, leaving empty handed isn't always a bad thing. I've found myself doing it a lot more than I used to. I've just become much more pickier in what I'm willing to buy and use storage space for.
Oh well I am still learning, did better on the furniture, I doubled my money on a hoosier cabinet after the auction, you win some you loose sum , as said we had alot of good fun.
