I don't know if you guys remember this little beauty that was once JA's coin, but is proudly in my collection. A scarce coin that is rarely found, at least, I haven't seen one. Furthermore, it is the plate coin in Wildwinds: Roman Imperial: Constans (337-350 CE) AE2 Follis, Arles (RIC VIII, Arles-103var) Obv.: DN CONSTA-NS PF AVG; pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev.: FEL TEMP-REPARATIO; soldier spearing fallen horseman who is kneeling left on ground, wearing Phrygian helmet; SARL ✶ in exergue Now meet its cousin that is equally scarce... Roman Imperial: Constantius II (348- 350 CE) AE2 Follis, Arles (RIC VIII, Arles-102var) Obv.: DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG; pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right Rev.: FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO; soldier spearing fallen horseman who is kneeling left on ground, wearing Phrygian helmet ; SARL ✶ in exergue Let me know what you guys think
at first i thought the first coin was just a "fallen man" instead of horseman, kind of heard to see the horse. i like these AE 2 fallen horseman, had to get one myself. Constantius II, 337-361 AD. Æ-2 O: DN CONSTAN TIVS PF AVG, Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, Soldier spearing fallen horseman. Γ / CONSS* in ex., mint of Constantinople, RIC VIII, 82. 23 mm, 6.5 g
Ya, the AE2s are pretty cool. Here's mine: Constantius II, AD 337-361 AE Follis, 5g, 25mm, 12h; Antioch mint, 350-355 Obv.: D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right. Rev.: FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Γ in left field, helmeted soldier left, spearing falling horseman who is clutching horse's neck // ANS
FH1 horsemen are always AE2 and scarce enough that it is not wrong to pick up any you find within reason. Exactly where to draw the line between an FH 1 and an FH 4 can be a problem as it is with most artificial collector groups. My Constans: and a Constantius II
