Bob,are they as bad as Scumburger 'Grading' 'Service' (SGS)? Dan (clembo) will want to write about it on his blog.

    What makes it "low quality"?
Is it the snap together coin holder?

Well, the snap together coin holder is part of it. But, selling that coin as an MS-69 is what did it for me. That coin is certainly not of 69 quality.

Ok. I couldn't tell an MS-69 from an Ms-68, from an MS-67. LOL
I wonder how many people honestly can?

    Dang !

The bag marks should knock that down to at least a 63-64.
Another one to watch out for.

i agree with your sarcasm.........you would think that at least it would be housed in a 'childproof' container!

all the more reason for collectors to learn as much about grading themselves as possible.

I'm already looking at them Aidan (thanks to this thread).

So if there's an East American Grading Company should we follow with a Southern, Midwestern, West?

I got dibbs on the Midwest!

If you don't know how to grade your coins then do yourself a favor and buy one that has been graded by an expert. The only companies I would own a slab from are:

PCGS - The best without question
NGC - a sometimes close second
ICG - doomed to be no better than third

But if you are serious about the best, stay with PCGS. The old timers will tell you that they aren't perfect either but at least the industry accepts their grade without question. A NGC 70 is considered a PCGS 69 but a PCGS 70 is considered a 70. All my NGC 70 regraded at 69 so I've seen it first hand. I know you NGC fans are cursing at me know right now but even in your hearts you know I'm right. :)

I bought a SMS70 JFK Proof off eBay for fun and I popped it out and sent it to PCGS and it graded 67. What a joke. All these alphabet soup grading companies are scams if you ask me. I really wish someone would really step up and give PCGS some competition as there are too many 70s coming out these days, except the ones I submit of course. :)

Just to present both sides of the story - what about all of the coins slabbed by NGC that are then upgraded by PCGS - those don't count ? The same can be said for coins slabbed by ICG & ANACS - PCGS has upgraded plenty of those as well. And no it isn't a one in a million occurrence either - it happens on a rather regular basis.

Do you know in your heart that I am right ?

I agree. Jump off the PCGS wagon for a while griv.

Are they good? Yes. Are they the best - stats say so but stats can say just about anything that any individual wants them to.

I know people that will re submit coins 3 and 4 times to get the grade they want from PCGS. What does that tell you? Tells me they are not THAT great and the bottom line may be a contributing factor.

I always recommend PCGS, NGC or ANACS. Yeah, I like ANACS.

PCGS and NGC will BOTH overgrade a key way before ANACS in my opinion. Of course, that's just my opinon.

As for the "alphabet" slabbers - they all pretty much suck. That's what this thread is about.

That's the point roto. Kick it up 2 notches and it's part of the Binion hoard and worth a lot more.
If I see chatter on the face it's a good bet I don't see it as MS67.

I do, but I believe IMHO, that this happens more often in the older coins where it really takes a true expert to make the distinction between the various grades and that boils down to the individual grader. I would have to say that I don't think this happens nearly as much within the modern eagles and SOLs where it is pretty much a 68,69,70 world. :smile

    Would you agree? :smile
