over graded coin. I have to admit I enjoy picking on PCGS. Don't get me wrong; they're one of my favorite grading companies. It's just that I can't stand the fact that there are so many amateur collectors out there that seem to think that PCGS is so much better at grading coins than the other services that they are willing to pay a substantial premium for a coin slabbed by them. There's just no way to rationalize it IMO. So, here we go. Does this coin really look like a VG-10 to you? C'mon there's hardly any wheat lines visible on the stocks. Not to mention it's got a weak looking VDB. VG-8 maybe, but VG-10? Do you folks really think NGC or ANACS would have graded this one that high?

Hey! It is an S VDB.

BTW, from what I can guess, ~3/4 of the wheat lines are there. I believe that it is just his picture that obscures them. Also, the "weak looking VDB", I have seen some XF/AU coins where you nearly have to use a loupe to see the VDB. His photos are a little blurry, but my guess is that most graders would call it VG IN HAND.

I don't know how accurate the seller's pictures are as I have never had this coin in my hand but I honestly don't see anywhere near 3/4 of the wheat lines in his pic. I can barely make out 1/4 of the lines. Not to mention the date looks rather weak as well (2nd "9" is ghostly).

    If that's a VG10 then I'm a PF70 DCAM

I know that PCGS is working with EBAY to identify counterfeit slabs and coins. Perhaps this would be worthwhile reporting. Even with liberal grading, there is absolutely no justification for the grade indicated on this holder. Good luck.

Well all the TPG's bump key date coins. And yes ANACs and NGC would and/or might grade this as F. I can point to just as many over graded ANAC's and NGC coins as PCGS coins. Personally I think for early copper PCGS is the best then NGC and ANACs are a distant second. If you saw what NGC did for the Reiver collection you would understand. But then again this all boils down to buy the coin not the slab - so it is not important what the grader put on the slab.

I agree, but then PCGS does the same thing when they are the ones grading a collection like that.

I don't doubt that at all. In general when looking at the early copper I just seem to see more questionable ones in NGC holders than PCGS - not saying I am always right, but I question them. At the same time I do own some NGC graded copper. So we still get back to buy the coin not the slab. :)

Most of us are keenly aware of practice of key date over-grading by the TPG's. But from the bidding as seen on EBAY, someone unlucky winner is going to have a rude awakening.

Yeah, very true - but that is true on a lot of coins on ebay. :) I have seen coins go from heritage to ebay with in a week - and the price jump several hundred dollars(and I mean easy to find coins). It is amazing sometimes on what coins bring on ebay. To me it seems to have gotten worse these last few years.

Now what would really be funny is - if someone sent it to CAC and they put a little green sticker on it, does that make it graded correctly? :) I just could not resist.

.......it's good practice to buy the coin and not the slab. but, in my opinion, you'll find far more in the audience that will buy the SLAB when ready to buy because they know it will be easier to sell than a raw coin. jmo.

Let me ask this question. How much would you ( any CT member ) be willing to offer for this coin?

Well, the coin lists at $930 in VG-8 on Numismedia so I'd have to say that the seller's price of $900 + shipping isn't unreasonable. I guess it's worth at least VG-8 money. However, I bought the NGC graded VG-10 in my Avatar pic for $813 shipped three weeks ago. A coin which in my opinion was possibly undergraded slightly (looks F-12 to my eyes). So knowing that there are some nice examples out there priced below book value, I'd have to say that I personally, at this time, wouldn't go more than $725 for that PCGS graded example.

Just to show what I meant about teh wheat lines, How do these compare to the OP's coin?

That coin appears overgraded as well. Again, insufficient wheat lines to qualify for a grade of VG-10. It most likely should have received a grade of VG-8. Is it also a PCGS graded coin? Btw, here is an example of an NGC graded VG-10:
