The coin has quite a bit of luster to it, but I don't think the color/luster came out well in the scans(shows "whiter" than it really is), they do however show the condition rather well. I wish I could get better pics, the back still has the "cartwheel" on the back when turned in the light and the front does but not nearly as well as the back. The mark on the "E" in "AMERICA" on the reverse was on the holder. Thanks for your opinions in advance.
I think it would go AU, but the mark on Liberty's cheek might be considered a scratch, and there is some disturbance (?damage) in the field in front of her forehead. The cheek mark would be a definite negative for me if I were looking for one of these. It's also possible there may have been some smoothing done on the reverse above TEN. Just opinion, of course, based only on the photos provided, so please take with a large grain of salt!
I would have to say AU, but like ksparrow said, I'm not sure about how much the scratch on the cheek would reflect on the grade. I'm no expert by no means, just my opinion. Reguardless, it's a nice coin.
I am going to say AU50 - looks like a hit, but I don't think damage. Of course I am not an expert in gold.
p.s. this coin (like many of the time period) seems to keep luster longer on the reverse than the obverse due to the design.
My thoughts were in the XF45-AU50 range as well... The area in front of the forehead looks like faint scratches/marks to me under my magnifine glass, also all the areas that show dark also have faint marks/scratches I not sure which they would be called. Really, I didn't know that...(not being sacastic) Thanks for the replies guys.
