http://www.ebay.com/itm/1893-S-1-Mo...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Can't help but cringe at the price tag.
Red flags for me, even being semi-untrained, is that it is an ungraded key date coin being sold by a person who "received it as a gift". Also, poor pictures. Scary price tag..
What a piece of caca. Then they show thd pcgs coin with it. Was a 1 glance fake for me. Details soft and the color is dead giveaway only way a real coin have that surface is to be cleaned to death
I notice a couple of common things on these fake Morgans, dates are a bit wacky and the rims are inconsistent.
Notice another thing not only soft deyltail but nearly no marks and am almost perfect cheek is an au55 pretending yo be ms 65. I'd expect a lot more marks on a real 93-s
I must be getting better at this. That date sent me at a dead run for pictures of a legitimate specimen. As I expected, the real date looks nothing like the date in the eBay photo. I only hope the high bidders were onto it, and protecting others from getting taken.
It's like they were going for the correct level of weirdness in the '9', and then overdid it terribly. Just look at the date alongside a known authentic example.
There is always people looking for a "deal". As long as those people are out there, there will be people ripping them off.
No doubt, but there's getting a deal and then there's shelling out 5k for a coin that doesn't look right when given more than a cursory glance. I would expect someone paying that much to be an advanced collector that would know better, or maybe someone using a stolen card. I guess it could also be a type of money laundering.
Seattlite: go to vamworld.com and click "Morgan VAMs by Date." All 93-S Morgans came from the same obverse die, and all feature (a) a far date, with the 1 centered over the 4th denticle, (b) a slanted die crack at the top-middle of the crossbar of the T in LIBERTY, (c) funky "rabbit ears" on bottom left leg of the R in LIBERTY, and (d) a slightly raised 3. this is a far date, but the 3 is way too high. photo quality too poor to make out the scratches/rabbit ears. Two reverse dies for this coin (and thus, there are only 2 VAMs for this coin). A centered, slightly high S (V-1) and a centered S slanted to the right, closer to the midpoint between the wreath and the DO in DOLLAR (V-2). This mintmark is way too high.
The counterfeiters over in China owe you a fat paycheck lol. But seriously this is s lower tier fake. They have made all the corrections as far as details now.
Many thanks. I actually own a small VAM guide, but since I don't have many Morgans, I haven't invested much time into learning them. I will be certain to reference these prior to ever purchasing from eBay. Better yet, I'll just buy from you honest, knowledgeable collectors.
Problem is that it's not only available from that seller in China, it's also available from this seller in Russia: http://baystore.ru/categories/11116...0-o-pcgs-ms-66-pl-old-us-silver-coin-ede11-17 ...although this listing seems to mention a dealer in Decatur, Illinois.
Are both listings current? Any chance this is the same coin, being marketed by multiple persons? Can you see obvious problems with the coin's features? I see a normal date with a high O, and several VAMs have these features. Can't make out finer detail. If the coin AND SLAB are fake, PCGS will want to know about it. They have lawyers and will take legal action to protect their brand
