Another domed commemorative series is coming in 2020, and you could design it! Sixtieth anniversary of the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield MA design competition is open.

Public Law 115-343 authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue domed $5 gold coins, domed $1 silver coins, and domed half-dollar clad coins, in recognition of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In accordance with the public law, the gold, clad, and silver coins will all share the same obverse (front) and reverse (back) design

I originally read this post as 'doomed'. By domed I assume you mean not flat.

Yeah, the press release should have spelled it (domed) with two "o's".

Commemorative,s are always hit or miss, some just dont measure up

However, if they put the number "30" on a jersey for Steph Curry, it might sell better.

Just what we need ... another gimmick coin.

I have the baseball things, but it was only because I wanted to keep my $5 gold set up to date. Since I have given up on that series, there is no reason for me to be attracted to this

I saw some Apollo 11 coins last night, and I have to admit that they look better than I thought they would. Still i'm not fan of this stuff.

Quit buying commemoratives a long time ago. They are just so much ballast used to keep the US Mint upright. And, the 5 quarters and 5 $1 coins a year are nothing but more ballast. Then your have 3 mints and 3 grades on each. Not me.

I rarely buy mint products but I might have to break down and order one next year. Hopefully it's better than the Olympic Commem.:vomit:

Think I'll hold out for the domed and oblong football commemoratives.

The domed can be a nice addition with the right subjects. Obviously the basketball side will look nice, but the other side will be a struggle to find something that fits the subject and looks nice that way. The baseball one worked out nicely as the glove as a natural curve to it anyway, but I can't think of something similar for basketball

Australia already did one last year. There's probably others that have been done to.

Another one that I won’t buy. There seems to be more and more of them lately.

I was really looking forward to this release and liked the concept, so I ordered the 3 proofs and the kids set. Now I don't think this was the greatest decision. The gold coin is very small and, because of that, the busy obverse design does not show up well. Also, the silver coin is packed so tightly in the case that I cannot remove it for fear that I will scratch or break the coin holder. Plus, the finger hole is way too tiny. When is the U.S. Mint going to learn how to pack their coins in the cases so you don't have to pry them out with a screwdriver? Every other mint in the world seems to know how to do it. This was a disappointment.

Gold is dense. Gold half-eagles are going to be about the diameter of a nickel and the thickness of a penny. The only way to make a larger-diameter gold commemorative is to reduce the fineness of the gold, or increase the weight, or further decrease the thickness.

As for the packaging, I suppose there's always a tension between making the case too tight to pry the capsule out, and making it so loose that the capsule can come loose during shipment. I've had each happen with various sets. It's not a new problem.

I keep my fingernails a bit long (for guitar), so I can usually pry a capsule out without damaging it, then open the capsule. If I couldn't, I'd want a plastic prying tool, maybe cut down from an old credit card.

I'd like it better if the Mint would come up with a packaging solution that isn't prone to rust, and to outgassing that produces haze on silver coins. As it stands, it's not a good idea to keep coins in their Mint packaging.

    Pro sports - no thanks.

Was a bane to my meager collection of 20 - 30 Wheats in late '60's (trading for baseball cards), and now, FURTHER disgusts me...

I don't even watch my college alma mater on TV - radio listening at best...

Holy COW - I thought it was a typo too :O
