Here is another coin I acquired recently. I know we have discussed these and shown our coins in the not too distant past, but because it's slow, post them again. My new coin is slightly different from the old in that Augustus' head is bare in the old coin while he is laureated on the new. First the new coin: AUGUSTUS AE Dupondius OBVERSE: IMP DIVI F P-P, back-to-back heads of Agrippa, in rostral crown, & Augustus, laureate REVERSE: COL NEM, palm tree curving to left, crocodile right chained below, wreath to left of palm tip with long ties trailing to right Nemausus (Gaul) 20-10 BC 11.97g, 26mm RIC 159 AUGUSTUS AE Dupondius OBVERSE: IMP DIVI F, back-to-back heads of Agrippa, wearing rostral crown, & Augustus, bare REVERSE: COL NEM, crocodile chained to palm, wreath with long ties trailing above. Nemausus (Gaul) 20-10 BC 13.1g, 26mm RIC 155
Heh, I think I'll have to hang on to mine for now. But if you ever tire of the two old broads on your other coin, look me up .
Someday I'll upgrade this incidentally acquired COL NEM. It was a surprise inclusion in a small lot of Ptolemaic bronzes purchased primarily for the 48 mm Ptolemy II. Condition aside, it does have a nice pedigree, having been acquired by Professor James Eaton in the 1800s and remaining in his family until I became the owner.
I apologize to those who discovered the croc last year when I went croc crazy. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/impossible.html I still maintain that they are Impossible to Grade.
=> another croc-coin!!? ... wow big brother, you're becoming Crocodile fricken Dundee!! ... I have a humble example as well, my friend (sadly, although it has pretty good overall details, it has no snout) A
ahaha ... good one, Oki geesh, I forgot that I had another croc-example (thanks for the assist, my friend) => oh, but my humble version is an A-Pius (your croc is better than my example, but I have a pretty cool deity comin' out of the cornucopia, eh?)
