So here is another Roman coin from an uncleaned lot that has some unrecognisable characters. I hope to research it, but have no idea what language is on the coin! Any hints? (Really appreciated the forum's help on the Asia Minor coin earlier) Mark
What you have is what's referred to as a barbarous follis. They were unofficial coins made in areas where there was shortage of coin, and they imitated official coinage with varied levels of skill. One thing that's very common is that the text is just gibberish, probably due to the die being carved by someone who was illiterate, and that appears to be the case here
Most peculiar state of affairs. Well that is just astounding!! Thanks for the response. I've just started looking at these things and there is a surprise every couple of days.
