I posted the images of this coin on another thread about coin photography, so I thought I'd go ahead a show it under it's own. Caracalla AR Denarius OBV: M AVR ANTON CAES PONTIF, bare-headed, draped bust right REV: PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS, Caracalla standing left, holding baton and scepter; trophy to right Struck at Rome, 196-8 AD 2.9g, 17mm RIC 13a
Nice ... gorgeous coin!! Ummm, so this is a recent purchase? => curious, how many Caracalla coins do you have? (is this the only one, or do you now have a couple, or 10's, or 100's?) ... what makes you buy a coin from a ruler that you already have? ... was it the super-cool obverse, or the awesome trophy reverse? ... or was it merely just a thrifty purchase? (I'm just a bit curious what motivates my good ol' coin-buddy?) Oh, and again => awesome coin!! :high5:
I have eight Caracalla coins. It should be nine, but I sold one to Eng. I don't exactly regret selling it to him, but ........ I've bought three since selling to him. This is my latest which I actually bought a few weeks ago (not long after I sold that one to John). Actually, all eight of mine are different from various times of his life and with various reverses. I liked this one because it was from his childhood days (before he became a monster I guess) and the reverse is interesting.
Cool ... yah, it's a great coin!! (congrats) => ummm, I only have one Caracalla, but it is "the bomb!!" => IN-COMING!!! CaracallaAR Antoninianus Rome mint 198-217 A.D. Struck AD 215 Diameter: 24 mm Weight: 5.19 grams Obverse: Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Reverse: Radiate / Luna driving biga of oxen left Reference: RIC IV 256c; RSC 294a Other: 6h ... RIC. Good VF, darkly toned, light porosity and deposits. Scarce
... but I must admit that my version is of a nasty old fella, while your version is of a young dude with a future still ahead of him!! nice coin!!
I have never understood the concept of wanting one coin per ruler. If I find a coin interesting, affordable and something that would make me feel better about my collection, I buy it. I do not feel pressure to buy a coin just because the face on it is someone I don't have. I would rather have $1000 worth of interesting and different coins of a ruler that I find interesting than a single $1000 coin of someone who history hardly mentions. It is a minority opinion, I realize. Caracalla is a example of a ruler many people like to collect in multiples. You can get a nice 'age' series from the cute kid through scowling monster. He even has posthumous 'Divus' coins but they are rare. You can get a nice series of denominations including the one he invented (the antoninianus). You can get many different provincial series including several well worth collecting in multiples themselves. His coins include several interesting reverses. Certainly Caracalla is not the most important or extensive series in any of these areas but there is absolutely no reason to limit yourself to just one coin. This software allows five coins per post. Here are five Caracalla coins I like but how could you limit yourself to just 5? Just 50? It is so easy to get carried away in this hobby.
Nice coin, really nice details on both the obverse and reverse. I like that Three Graces coin by Dougsmit too. The story, coin and design has intrigued me to look for one. Have yet to find one in a grade and price I like though.
Nicely stated, Doug => and sure, that is a valid arguement ... I see your point, but it is a discussion/debate where I could easily defend the other point of view as well, right? => why concentrate on one ruler, when there are so many Rulers (coins) to collect?? I started-out trying to collect one coin from every Roman Ruler, but because my real addiction is animal-coins, I find a lot more of these types of coins under a few specific Rulers, so I quickly deviated away from my initial goal ... I just went through and determined that I have collected "45" Roman Rulers and/or Roman Ruler's significant others ... and of these 45 individuals, I have multiple coins from "9" of them: Augustus x 2 Trajan x 3 Hadrian x 3 Antonius Pius x 2 Septimus Severus x 2 Elagabalus x 2 Godian III x 2 Philip I x 2 Otacilia Severa x 2 => most of these multiples are directly related to the fact that they have great animal-coins and/or coins with very cool reverses (NOTE => I'm sure that once I get started, Gallienus' Zoo series will also become an obsession ... I have only bought the Panther, to-date) Oooops, sorry to steal your thread Bing ... yah, apparently Doug kinda got me onto a bit of a tangent (thanks for your comments and/or point of view, Doug)
Jw, your new Caracalla looks great, looks like a young man..very cool...:thumb::thumb:.. Here's the coin that jw was talking about..Thank you, i love it... Also if you have an extra Marcus Aurelius hanging around jw, send me a pic...:smile
John, are you just trying to make me feel bad for the loss? Only kidding my friend. That's a great looking coin ya got there.
Man, it sounds like good ol' Eng is slowly twisting the knife, eh? (that's cold) ... yup, first A-Noob turned on ya and now Eng has decided to up-his-game!! => Cap'n Bing, it sounds like you're startin' to lose control of the Crazy-ship!!
