I visited my friend the old time collector & added these neat world coins to my collection. The lot was not very expensive but as usual, it sure is interesting. Some of the UNCs are from 1900 to 1910. Here is an executive summary. Match the description to the coin in the photos. Austria 1908 Anniversary 1 Corona UNC Austria 1900 5 Corona UNC Ceylon 1815 2 Stivers EF Ceylon 1906 ½ Cent AU France 1904 25 Centimes UNC Haiti 1907 20 Centimes VF Haiti 1908 50 Centimes VF Hong Kong 1902 Bronze Cent AU Hong Kong 1901 Silver 5 Cents UNC Japan Ichibu Gin UNC (Haven’t figured this date or confirmed authenticity yet) Netherlands 1908 5 Cents UNC Peru 1964 Brass Sol AU Russia 1908 15 Kopeks UNC Russia 1908 20 Kopeks UNC Togo 1957 10 Francs EF Togo 1957 25 Francs EF Uruguay 1965 Alum/Bronze 5 Peso UNC I hope to take better photos of these individual coins. The Bu coin from Japan does not exactly match any of the book photos so I’m wondering if it is genuine. It certainly is attractive. Thanks for letting me share. I also got six Chinese coins which are high grade & more than 100 years old. I will make a separate post when I take those photos. Very best regards, collect89
Wow, an OUTSTANDING coin lot... I'm jealous! I don't understand how some people can stick to collecting coins from just one country...
Some real super coins there, I love the heads on the HK QV 5c and also on the French 25C and of course the 2 Stivers :hail:
Beginning alphabetically Here are the two coins from Austria. I really like the reverse of the 1900 Austrian 5 Corona. It is about the size of a US silver dollar & this one has a lot of luster. This Austrian 1 Corona commemorates the 60th anniversary of reign (1848 to 1908) for Franz Joseph I.
The Ceylon Stiver & 2 Stiver has been on my want list for a long time. The elephant is what catches my eye. This half cent from Ceylon includes the British monarch with his crown. I think this portrait with crown is much better than the portrait used on the English coins of the time.
The British monarch on this Hong Kong cent is again wearing the crown. IMO, he should have always kept his hat on.. Here is a good view of the very pretty 1904 French coin.
1965 Uruguay, 1908 Russia, 1908 Netherlands I've gotten several 1915 UNC Russian coins in the past. This is the first 1908 I have found in UNC. This Netherlands coin is thick & the design appears to be very well protected by the rims. If you want to stack coins, then this the coin design for you.
From the straight-edged top and bottom, and guessing at the size based on the surrounding coins, I think your Ichi Bu Gin is probably the ~16x23mm Tenpo Era (1837-54) coin, which would weigh 8.66g. The Meiji Era (1868-69) version weighs the same, but it is a little thicker with slightly smaller measurements. In general other candidates are eliminated by their somewhat rounded tops and bottoms.
Bu-bu Hello Hontonai, Thanks for your help. The dimensions of my coin are closer to 15.6mm x 25.4mm. Looking at the details of the characters, I don’t see a precise match in my Krause book or online. Please take a look at these photos and you may see differences between my coin & the catalog photos. Note the position where the top-right character points to the top-left character. Do you think my coin is genuine? This is the 1837-54 version: This is the 1859-68 version: This is my coin: I didn’t bother to copy a photo of the Meiji 1868 to 69 coin because the catalog photo is not clear & characters style look very different from my coin. Thanks for looking & very best regards, collect89
