I know the pictures are bad, can't help that but based on what you see does anything say that it is a fake.
You are right about the quality of the images . From these (to my eye at least) there is nothing that screams out `this is definitely genuine' or `this is definitely fake'. Now then having said that, it might be the image, it might be my eyesight, it might be my imagination....BUT... the `8' opposite the MM gets my attention. The top appears to be smaller than the bottom (?). If i'm not mistaken on a genuine 8R the top and the bottom of the 8 is roughly the same dimension (?) I claim no expertise concerning 8R's though......
Ian is correct about the 8 - that pretty much clinches it for me. But it would be helpful to see better pics.
I see what you are saying, this is a coin on e-bay right now. In reference to the "8" have you seen this before on fakes ?
I looked at some historical sites showing the 8 reale and i see what you are saying ! -- That was very helpful thanks allot !!
Ok, i am testing what i have learned, this one seems fake, pits, and the 5 in the date is not like the other 5's i have seen on this coin. http://cgi.ebay.com/1753-PERU-8-Reales-SUPER-CONDITION_W0QQitemZ290074242007QQihZ019QQcategoryZ45164QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Correct. Definitely one to avoid. As to the `8'. It's not so much a case of having seen it before on fakes as it is not having seen it at all on the real thing. Ian
Ok, i am going to call this one real, but the tractor tire edge usually cuts into the rim a little. i believe that a light edging alone would not determine if it was a fake. although he doesn't have a weight, i would want to know this. http://cgi.ebay.com/Mexico-Pillar-8-Reales-1761-Uncirculated_W0QQitemZ260077157963QQihZ016QQcategoryZ541QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Probably genuine. Personally i've never come across all that many high quality 8 R's and unless I knew the seller or knew someone who did I for sure wouldn't be outlaying that kind of money via ebay. To me the suckering going on with that one is in the asking price....but as I said, i'm no expert! Maybe someone somewhere thinks it is worth $950, but not this particular tight fisted Scots git .
i agree that the price is high, i am just trying to hone my skills a little. your help is most appreciated.
Well, I agree this coin is a fake. However, the 5 used is the correct 5 for this date and mint. That's one of the things you have to learn or at least the books to look it up - letters, digits and other design elements changed over the years depending on date and mint. What that means is what may be the correct design of any of them for say Mexico City in any given year does not mean it is the same for say Lima in the same year.
A word of advice, until and unless you become very familiar with values and authenticity, in particular values, don't even bother to look at auctions by that seller :secret: For instance, this example cost me about $300 -
Are you showing that coin because it is a fake? If so can you explain why, I don't see any of the obvious signs that it is.
Not at all, the coin I posted is completely genuine. I was making a point on the value of the coins. The coin in the link posted by zapdbf was a coin of the same date and mint and the seller was asking $950 for it. I believe the coin I posted is in even nicer condition and yet I was able to buy it for about $300. And that's the point - this particular seller consistently does this. Yes the coin is genuine, but here he is asking more than triple what the coin is really worth.
