Numismatic News has reported another new error discovered on the 2005-D Buffalo nickel - a dropped T. As of yet, the coin news sites have not picked up the story so I cannot provide a link with pics. But that T is there, bigger than life - right in the middle of the field above Liberty on the obverse of the coin.

The error was discovered by a 14 yr old girl in New York. Quite a find for a YN ;)

WOW---she has a great eye....It seems to me that something is rotten in the Denver Mint...they have 2 errors on the Buff Nickels and a WI Quarter....and it is also weird that the WI quarters only were found near one place as were the Speared Buffs....

It's really not weird Speedy - it's more the norm. Because of the way errors are produced in limited numbers they tend to all get shipped in the same batch rather often. So wherever that batch of coins ends up is where they'll be found. It has happened many times in the past just that way - an error will be found but only in one localized area.

As for this dropped T error - it would be almost impossible to fake or cause it to happen because of the nature of the error. What happens is that dirt, grease & metal filings accumulate in a letter or digit of the die which causes what we know as filled die errors. But if enough of the stuff that fills the die is say metal filings, it gets packed into the letter recess of the die and gets harder and harder with every coin it strikes. But sometimes this hardened material will drop out of the recess it was stuck in and land on a planchet. With the next strike this hardened material can be pressed right into the surface of a coin or even create a new recess in the die. Once the new recess is there in the die - the next strike produces that same design on the next coin - only this time it is raised metal on the coin itself. A new letter or digit appears on the coin where one never was before.

It really looks cool. Once the story and pics become available to the public I'll post a link. May be a week or so though.

I happily defer to your superior knowledge of the subject Mike. Just about everybody knows I'm not an error guy - but I'm learnin ;)

Maybe we'll turn you. My main collection is error coins. I've put together a nice "type set" of different errors from a a single date. I think I have over 40 different type of errors from that single date. Kinda cool. Still have to get a few must haves like a dated fold over and a 6 sent piece (I had one but sent it back, I don't like fingerprints)

If you think about it many errors are one of a kind. So some of my errors have a population of 1. The eye appeal on many of these errors is oustanding.

Then you have the classics like the 55 dd or the 3 legged.

Or the ultra expensive like the the 2000 mule sacky.

Just something different for people who are a little off centered.

I rather doubt it, errors hold no interest for me other than to learn & understand how they happen so that I may help others do the same. I don't even collect US coinage any longer. I do own several coins that have errors - but the error is not the reason I own the coin - it just happens to be there.

Hmmm...sounds like you need to have a few on hand for accurate comparison and "education of others" :D
