Got this in the mail last night, and having recently upgraded my photography capabilities (though not my skills), I thought I'd share it. It typifies what I like about Republican denarii: detail heavy designs with lots of meaning and symbolism behind them. It's not a perfect specimen, but as always I tend to buy bargains. I'm assuming the porosity is just normal corrosion for silver, but the edge does show a slight seam/line in certain areas. It is also very slightly light for the type. The details are all sharp, though, so I believe it is authentic? Feel free to share your coins of this type, or any other Republican types with interesting or meaningful designs. Anonymous Denarius Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma right, wearing Corinthian helmet; below, ROMA; behind, X Reverse: Roma, wearing Corinthina helmet, seated right on a pile of shields, holding spear in l. hand; at feet, beside pile of shields, helmet; before, she-wolf and twins; on either sides, birds flying. Struck at Rome in 115 or 114 BC; Crawford 287/1; 3.67g, 19mm
Looks OK to me, great design on the reverse , congrats. Here's my denarius with the same problem, porosity:
Nice RR Denarius @SeptimusT ! I captured mine not too long ago for the same reasons as you... Commonly called a Didrachm, but being 10 Asses it is Romes first Denarius. RR Anon AR Heavy Denarius - Didrachm 310-300 BCE 20mm 7.28g Mars-Horse Romano FIRST Silver coin minted. 10 Asses=Denarius as the Romans would had called it.
These almost anepigraphic denarii are lovely! I got one several years ago before even knowing much about Republican denarii. I just thought it was a beautiful design. Roman Republic, Anonymous Rome, 115-114 BCE AR denarius, 20 mm, 3.91 g, 10 h Obv: Helmeted head of Roma right, X behind, ROMA below Rev: Roma, helmeted, seated on two shields, holding spear before her, she-wolf standing right at her feet, head turned back, sucking Romulus and Remus. Nice! I like this type a lot, though I don't yet have one of my own. (I think yours is genuine, BTW.)
