I'm not trying to get the set of these (there are a couple of really rare ones that make that a bad idea) but I could not pass up this one from eBay last week. Some will say it is a piece of trash but, comparing it to the ones shown online, it is not a bad coin. Type J is attributed to Alexius I 1081-118AD emperor during the First Crusade. This oe is unusual in that it does not show an undertype but the flan is cut down from an earlier coin. At 5.72g, it is heavy for the type. Type J is distinguished by the large crescent and array of globules and pellets on the reverse. the only legend is the obverse IC XC of which I lost the last letter. Lets just say the face could be better but I'll ask you to show yours with features. I know many here have other Anonymous folles since it has not been long since we had a thread on them. Does anyone have a J or any of the really rare ones (L, M or the Plutoed N)? N was discovered not to be anonymous as first thought since a better coin was found showing an obverse legend. I'd still like one.

Can anyone point out detail on this one from an undertype?

Doug, that is a good example. Here is another Class J:

    Sear 1900. Class J. 24-222 mm. 7.09 grams.
Overstruck on Alexius I, Sear 1888, the reverse axis of which is about 1:30 on the obverse of this coin. See the Delta from 1988 at 4:30. Also, see the halo behind the top of the cross on the reverse which is from the undertype's bust-of-Christ obverse with the "X" of "XC" still visible to the right.

Most "anonymous bronze" are overstruck and the overstrikes allow them to be put in order.
